what is the best all-around lens for nikon?

25-70mm f/2.8 I think is the best but I now only use the 70-200 f/2.8

18 -200mm will be a good travel len as it cover landscape and teleporter.

18-200 mm lense best one stop lenase for Nikon. It is a mgood travel companion. I do not think it is that good for macro photography but it is very good for all the other shots.

I just got the 18-105 mm VR, and am quite pleased. I got a Nikon rebuilt one and saved over $100. Previously I used the 18-55 kit lens. Optically it was very good, but often time the zoom came up a bit short, and the VR works great. This is the standard lens for the D90.

I'd try the 18-270mm by Tamron. Great lens and takes everything from Macro to wide angle to telephoto. This is an everyday lens and then you can spend your other money on specialty lenses like a fisheye or a lensbaby.
