Hi guys and gals.
I've been using my canon 400d now for 3 years and i'm hoping to upgrade to a more "semi-pro/pro"  style model in the next few weeks.
While my heart and head would love to own the latest canon 1d, i'm afraid the purse strings and credit cards don't let me reach that ambition.

so with the budget i shall have the battle is going to be between a canon 7d or a 5d MKII

i know the mp are different for the both camera's and i'm lookin for one to have an all round range to suit sports right through to portraits and weddings and has a great ISO range with a "little noise" ability?.

So, which one would be the best buy??? I've heard "stories" of the 7d having problems and being sent back to canon for repairs, that the 5d MKII is bulky and a bit awkward...

anyone got either and/or both these camera's like to help out with some adivce to which is the better buy? the camera sales guy just want to get the most outta ye money wise.. fraid our local boys don't know much about cameras and their spec!

any help would be greatly appreciated!
thanks
Jx

There are definitely pro's and con's to both cameras. Here are a few good online resources to help you in your research:

7D review: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EOS-7D-Digital-SLR...

I gave only the 7D review because most reviews will make a comparison between the 7D and the 5D mark II anyways. Do note the shutter lag and frame-per-second for the 2 cameras, however, since you're coming from a 400D, both cameras will be faster. FYI: shutter-lag is the time between fully pressing the shutter and taking the picture; this might make or break your decision.

You're not going to beat the noise control of the 5D Mark II because it's a full-sensor, but again coming from a 400D both camera's will have far better noise control. IQ is better overall on the 5D Mark II; at least that's what I hear from photographers who own both.
If you are worried about bulky...the 7D is actually heavier. Go with the 5d MKii the people I know who have one could not be happier.
I'm sort of in the same situation. But I think I'm going to go with the 7D. It's new technology, so it has new processors and sensor and such. They are bound to bring out a new "5D" soon, so I'd rather not buy something that's going to be outdated with new technology.

There is a 60D coming out soon, I'm not sure if its a full frame or not. But keep an ear out for it!

One of my inspirational photographers, Matthew Ebeneezer, bought a 7D not so long ago (after already owning a 5D mark II) and he loves it.... PREFERS it. see some of his (and his partners) stuff- http://mattandkatieblog.com.au/

But of course that's just his opinion. It's really up to you whether you want the full frame or not - if its important enough to you. And if so, do you want it more than you want the newest processors and sensor that the 7D has.
Hi ! i upgraded from a 30D to a 5D/II and i find the quality diference quite staggering. The 5D/II is perfect for Portraits, Weddings and Landscape photography but because it can 'only' shoot at a max of nearly 4 frames per second then it is not particularly ideal for Sports (however this does not mean that you cannot use it for Sports photos - it just limits you a little bit!). The 7D has almost the resolution of the 5D/II and a much faster fps rate so is the more suited to Sports photography of the 2 cameras, plus you have the benefit of having a cropped sensor as opposed to the full-frame sensor of the 5D. The 5D/II is lovely to hold even with my small hands though i do use a Battery pack attached to it. If you do go for the 5D/II then you have to buy Canons 'EF' series lenses, as EF-S lenses cannot be used which you can on the 7D. Hope this helps ?
