Hi guys. I know joining photography contests are a great way to get exposure for your work, but I was wondering what are your other reasons, aside from that? :)
They are fun...
Sometimes the topic of the contest is one that isnt necessarily one you are familiar shooting, but if you push yourself to do it you may learn something. Before the voting, there's usually a critique discussion where you can put out a couple shots and see how different people react to them or would have changed them...
Gain new friends.
I've never entered one... but I would just for the exposure, feedback, money possibly, recognition and perhaps because it may lead to bigger and better things!
The people who enter the photo contest through where I work do it for $1500. Then, their photo graces over 30,000 posters hung on the walls of our publication's readership and through out a number of schools (photos are on a educational history project poster in calendar form).
I posted the link and promotional ad in the Contests forum.
