Thanks friends, for the moment of your time, I have a problem not being able to open images, not even view thumbnails, from the Library, (first of five processing stations) in the this otherwise fine Photoshop Lightroom 3.0.I'm sure I'll figure this out, but it would be nice to save some headscratching. I dont have anything extra up there to waste. Lol
I've got 5000 plus Images loaded/imported, I can see their descriptions by original camera file number and Meta data, but I can't seem to get my images to open there. All are full sized Jpegs w/ all the Metadata, and most of them undisturbed, right out of the Camera and (onto Compact flash from my Nikon D300).
I don't have "a book" of any kind of instruction manual of course, but have been searching help and other resources all day long and still very little luck. These same images will open in the other four phases of Lightroom's Processing means. Any clues friends?
Regarding my Background Experience in this regard
I am new to this Adobe Lightroom users group and new to the Picture Social Network but have been looking for something like this great stuff for quite a while (both to share and especially to learn)! I am admittedly a "fly by the seat of the pants" learner, and find that for me, doing such with new Software especially, "has its bumps and brusies" to say the least, but they are worth the end result, IMHO!
What's more, it's got some exciting moments like eventual;ly getting out of this "being stuck in the muck" where I am challenged to bring "new thought processies into play"! It is good for my gray matter, according to my Doc's, and is surely the right thing to do on occasion! This may be one of those occasions, so "fear not the darkness, for from there "the Light surely must shine"!
I am an experienced digital photographer who's spent most of my time in digital photography using Photoshop fine "Element's" series! I've recently discovered the new Photoshop Elements 10, and am sure its the best of the bunch IMO!They've all been good and certainly worth every penny, though admittedly limited! I have too recently experimented with Photoshops CS 5.5 Suite on a 30 day trial, including the CS 5.1 Extended, which I am considering purchasing. What Power! Not sure I need it all.
In recent weeks I've plunged headlong into experimenting with HDR (High Dynamic Range) Photography with purchasing Photomatix HDR Pro, strictly for the HDR processing advantages, and though I have little doubt there are better programs out there for such tasks. I just don't though that a better program is needed, or if so, which one would that be? What would be your opinion about that, if you dont mind? Happy shooting friends! dennis

When you import JPG you should get the import window which gives you four choices: Copy as DNG, Copy, Move, Add.
I usually use Add which adds them to your catalog but does not move them from their folders. You should be able to view and open these files.
Also, if you are testing out Lightroom, why bother with LR3? LR4 is in public beta and should be out in a couple of months. This has a lot of nice upgrades from the previous version. You can go to Adobe's site to download this new version. It will be active until the official version is released.

I knew when I saw her that she was the kind of subject that a portrait photographer gets to stumble into once in a great while that "must be photographed" if she can be.
I asked permission and it was granted. I use the image today with some of my students to affirm the reason why "we must always be prepared for that one exceptional opportunity for a Great Picture"! Besides in the Land of Enchantment and beyond in the southwest, the Mystery Mountains of Az, the San Luis Valley of CO, you can never tell what sort of "Wildlife" of "Other Worldly Phenomenon" my appear at the next turn. People dont usually joke too much about "them" anymore, we are not alone! The body of evidence is staggeringly lopsided! Keep a camera or two ready always,, motion picture also.DAS
Permalink Reply by dennis sowell on January 25, 2012 at 11:31am Mike, thanks for responding. I've added the Beta LR 4 to my Computer and seems it has some advantages over what I was working with previously. Thanks for that suggestion. I wouldn't have known it without your help.
AS to functioning with Lightroom, or CS5 versions, or whatever else I may choose to challenge myself with, I've found myself up against the wall more times than not, and failing to understand what to do next to help myself get going again.
This is undoubtedly a result of my own "declining cognitive function", which was diagnosed many months ago, as a big part of my overall health issues. Physically I am good condition, and have many years to go before any expected decline, but the cognitive function has been steadily going downhill and there seems to be no stopping the slide.
That said, I have been told that anything I can do to further challenge myself mentally will benefit my grey matter! Doing so has been proven to be a valuable help in at least slowing the decline, if not actually renewing neural pathways. Doing more mentally while expecting only whatever results may come from it (with realistic goals) is the best I can do.
Thanks for your helpful information. I may yet succed at learning new things above my current level of function, time will tell! Either way I enjoy every day that I can shoot, or just work inside on post processing, (with new stuff challenging me), I still enjoy it! That is why I do it in the first place!
Get out and shoot! dennis
