I took this photo a couple of years ago, but it remains my favorite and it's the most popular photo on my flickr site. To capture this one I had the camera set on shutter burst and the sports mode that will ensure a fast shutter speed and a lot of luck. The bird circled me so I had a long period of time he was in range and focus. It was hand held with a 70-300 mm Nikon lens.
The key to capturing good bird photos are spending a lot of time where they rest, nest, feed or breed. Refuge's are good places or just a park or wetland that attract wildlife. Secondly, the right camera and lenses (like one in the 300 mm range), and become familiar with the settings on the camera. Getting close enough just requires a lot of experience and knowing the habits of the birds. There are some good books on outdoor and wildlife photography that give good tips on getting that great shot.
Great shots of the blue heron Jimbo. I have to agree with your reply to Mr. Gott about spending time on "their turf" in order to get some great shots...
