Few years ago (8) I started my DSLR journey with a Nikon D100, then I got a Nikon D2H, without leave them I got a Canon 10D, then a 20D, then a Nikon D70, a Sony F828, but suddenly I end up with a CANON EOS 5D and since then I only bought CANON, I mean lenses. But I get rid off almost all my NIKON arsenal. Now I will buy a new one and I have been reading here and there and I found very interesting things on the Nikon´s side, that´s why I´m asking you guys: Why did you choose CANON?...

I have had both,i like Canon lens better, they are both good,so are many other camers.I think Nikon has a slight edge right now,but i hear Canon is coming out with a new pro camera very soon.
Thank you David
Consistency, reliability, lens compatibility, craftmenship, solid feel, quality lenses, IS lenses...I have had the others, and still do, I find myself gravitating back to my Canons...whether is the 30D/40D/50D or my most recent 5D MII-they perform consistantly, what more do you want from a camera...? .
Thank you Dennis,That one is the one I'm thinking buying: 5D MIII... we will see...
I started with Canon, because my ex-wife bought me an AE-1 for Christmas of 79. After wearing it out and using a Minolta Maxxum 7000 for a while. I ended up buying a 30D because it felt better in my hands than the Nikons or Sony(Minolta) models available at the time. I always tell people to buy the camera you feel comfortable handling.
Hi Rob! I used a AE-1 and I still have it but it does not work, I bought it on a flea market like 18 years ago!
I chose Canon because theybrought out the first DSLR which I could afford. But instead of the sub-thousand dollar Rebel 300D; I purchased the slightly more expensive and sophisticated 10D body and added a 24-70mm f/2.8L lens. It has been Canon all the way since then. I like the Canon lens selection and the Canon cameras are just fine.

I shoot with a 30D and a 40D but, will be upgrading the 30D to a 7D some time in the future. I am not particularly interested in full-frame. Right now my primary travel and general purpose setup is the 30D and 40D with 17-55mm and 70-200mm f/4L IS lenses. I use the 40D and 24-70L in my studio...
Thank you Richard, I love full frame! I think I can't live without it.
I think people choose a brand (from the 2 famous canon nikon) mostly by choice. I choose canon because my master had a canon and first time when I touched a DSLR was his camera. And then I bought a canon 400d my first DSLR. Since then it was Canon all the way. I have a 20D and a 5D and only canon lenses; 5D Mark is truly a masterpiece. I am with Canon and will stick to it. I tried different types of Nikons but don't find them handy. What I like at Nikon is the low noise of the shutter. Wheatear you are shooting macro or street photography Nikon is a real advantage, canon is noisier than Nikon. I would not change canon for Nikon as I really like their cameras and the range of lenses. Looking to buy the 5D Mark II now, I have already tried it, great camera, light, powerful, full frame, HD film, but I had a slightly problem with the auto focus, and you need to be careful as it switches off itself (and it was not only me having this problem).

Between Canon and Nikon, Canon was the first to get into digital and were selling digital cameras for quite a while before Nikon got into the act. Canon has the edge. Nikon is trying very hard to catch up.
I have that marvelous Canon 5D Mark II and I LOVE that camera. It doesn't switch off. It may be looking at two different things and cannot focus because of this. In a case such as this you just focus manually. It is truly a great camera!
Sorry, just to make clear I said that the autofocus switches off itself not the camera.

Don't get me wrong, I personally think that Canon EOS 5D was the best digital SLR ever made by Canon until Mark II came on the market, which is even better.

But the autofocus seems to be an “issue”; few days before being out for a beer with several photographers, all very skilled canon users I heard them discussing the same issue - autofocus on Mark II so it's not only me. But it doesn't seem to be a major issue. In many cases manual focus is not an option. If you search the internet you will find that 5D Mark II autofocus system faced many complaints from photographers about autofocus misfires.

But just to make clear, I anyway shoot on manual focus most of the time and I was not put off by this small issue which seems to be a settings issue rather than a factory fault; my next camera will be Canon EOS 5D Mark II very soon.

Kind regards
Ion
