The Photography Network - PictureSocial

This little forum stays just a little too quiet. I know there are lots of D5000 owners out there... so chime in.

Now that this camera has been out for a while, and we have had time to love/hate the quirks of this little camera, lets get a survey of how we feel. Write in some of your most and least favorite features of the camera. If you found a solution to any particular problem, share that as well.

For Me: My favorite feature of the camera is it's compatibility with just about ANY nikon lens ever made. Sure, you don't get metering and autofocusing, but you can get a phenomenal deal on fast prime lenses (180mm F/2.8, $23.... 400mm Tokina-made vivitar, F/6.3 but mighty sharp..$60).

Next favorite feature: Live View. Fantasttic aid for getting the focus perfect. When I have time to compose the shot, I can magnify the live view image and tweak to focus to near perfection. This applies not only to the old manual focus lenses, but also to newer autofocus lenses (which don't always focus as well as you'd like).

Third favorite feature: Awesome low light capture. Noise levels are pretty good up to ISO 800, still reasonable at 1600.

Least favorite features: Having to dig through the menu system for most of the settings. Sure, you can set the programable function button to suit ONE of your commonly accessed functions, but I often get delayed changing the white balance or flash settings.

Would have liked a better viewfinder as well.

Built in motor would have been nice... but you get what you pay for (next time: D300!)

Does anyone even use the scene modes?

Jeff - You summed up all my likes and dislikes also. Going through the menus is not such a downer for me since I created a custom menu for my most often used settings. This is a nice feature the D5K has that saves me lots of time in making setting changes on the fly. It would be nice to have a DOF button on this model but not a real big downer for me. I love this camera now and must admit I had second thoughts after purchase of whether I should have purchased the D90. My main reason for getting the D5K was it size and weight and glad my initial intuition won out. The picture quality is superior and really like, for my taste, the tendency to underexpose but this can be easily adjusted when needed. Rock on D5K great value.
I was not aware of the custom menu function.... I will have to look that one up.
I think its a fine little camera. I even use the video mode, which I thought I would never use
I don't use the video feature too often, but it is nice to have when I need it. I've used it with some close-focus lenses to document some procedures at work and it does a fantastic job. As this involves some fine-detail type work, the HD-Video allows me and my fellow researchers to review some of our procedures and identify any deficits in our technique.
Where are you getting those lenses so cheap???
On ebay. some of these lenses go way expensive during bidding, some don't move much at all. i
For a beginner like me, this model is a surefire for me. I have been photoshooting with my colleague and he/she happens to have another brand a high end camera but the result, I can say I get more competitive captures than them joke! ;-) Furthermore, I guess the ability of a person is more important, than the equipment, if you can't give justice to your justice to your shoots ;-D

For me as of now I like the features of this model to some up. Though there are minor perks but can be retouched afterwards...:-)

It pays me for what I've been expected most. ;-D
I do not use the scene modes. Recently purchased the 50mm 1.8 lens and it is really making me slow down my shots a lot BUT I can't complain. Totally in love with it and it doesn't bother me that there is no motor whats so ever... makes me actually LEARN the technique and not just assume my camera's motor will make it perfect! I enjoy the camera very much! Haven't found much negative to it at all

I agree. I think its helpful to have to slow down and think about your shots from time to time.  I also find that autofocus does not always do what you want it to do anyhow.  On the D5000 (or D5100 nowadays),Being able to use live-view really helps with the manual focusing.

Have you tried going full-manual to try to see if you can learn to estimate proper exposure?
