I'm about to spring for  tripod and head and would appreciate some input.  Ball head or pan/tilt head?  Is there an advantage in one over the other?

Ball head is without question the quickest and easiest. I have both types and would strongly recommend ball over pan/tilt.
I agree with Peter - Ball Heads are much quicker. You position the camera - then lock'em down in one move. Pan/Tilt heads usually have 3 separate axis that you have to adjust (fiddle-with) individually and it can get frustrating. I have a pistol-grip style ball-head that I love (made by Sunpak).  However - if you shoot video, sometimes pan/tilt heads are smoother for this...
Thank you, Gentlemen, for the input.

John,

Look up the company Really Right Stuff.  They have absolutely the best equipment.  Look at he B-55 or smaller B-40 Ball heads.  I have the B-55 and it is fantastic.

John,

I have both, ball and pan/tilt, heads and I agree mostly with the others.  But one major concern for me, is the weight of my camera and lens.  If you have a heavier camera and lens, then I would recommend a pan/tilt because it offers greater stability, even though more time consuming.  But since we are in the "Landscape" section of Picture Social, does it really matter that much, if we are shooting landscapes.  If we were shooting action or wildlife, for example, then ball heads have a greater superiority over pan/tilts.  But honestly, I shoot a tremendous amount of landscape/waterscape photography and my pan/tilt suits me just fine.  Hope this helps you.

Keep focused,

Eddie
