ACB invites photographers to zoom in on biodiversity


Calling all professional and amateur photographers, photography enthusiasts and students!


The ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) has announced that it is now accepting entries to the First ASEAN-wide photo contest “Zooming in on Biodiversity” during the International Day for Biodiversity 2009 (IDB 2009) celebrations at the SEARCA Auditorium, Los Baños, Laguna on 22 May.


Conducted in partnership with the European Commission (EC), the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and the Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication (AIJC), the photo contest seeks to popularize biodiversity among its stakeholders and the general public through the medium of photography.


The contest, which will run from 22 May 2009 to 30 August 2009, is part of ACB’s key thrust to promote regional public awareness on biodiversity conservation. It was also designed to increase the involvement of media practitioners, professional and amateur photographers, young photography hobbyists, and the business sector in generating awareness for biodiversity conservation.

Contest details:

1.Who may join

The contest is open to all residents of ASEAN Member States:

o Brunei Darussalam
o Cambodia
o Indonesia
o Lao PDR
o Malaysia
o Myanmar / Burma
o Philippines
o Singapore
o Thailand
o Viet Nam

o Staff and immediate family members of the contest organizers (ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity, European Commission, ASEAN Secretariat, and the Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication) are not eligible for the competition.

Participation is free of charge.

2.Contest Theme
The contest theme is “Zooming in on Biodiversity.”

Entries should capture various images related to biodiversity (plants, animals, marine life, ASEAN Heritage Parks) or the many benefits that biodiversity brings to human beings, its importance, the threats biodiversity face (deforestation, Climate change), or how biodiversity affects lives. Photos showing initiatives to protect biodiversity resources such as plants, animals, and marine Species are also welcome.

Photos can also depict:

a) Biodiversity as source of food (food and agriculture)
b) Biodiversity as source of medicine (health and medicine)
c) Biodiversity as source of shelter
d) Biodiversity and climate change
e) Aesthetic value of biodiversity
f) Biodiversity as source of livelihood
g) Biodiversity and ecotourism

3. Contest Categories

The contest categories are:

a. Professional Category – Professional photographers who derive income from the sale of photographs or provision of photographic services

b. Amateur Category – Amateur photographers

c. Student category –High school and college/university students (must be 18 to 25 years old)

4. Contest Duration
The contest begins on 22 May 2009 during the International Day of Biodiversity and ends at 12:00 noon (Philippine time) of 30 August 2009.

5. Contest Mechanics

o Entries must be exclusive to this contest, unpublished, and must not have been submitted as entries in previous contests.

o Each contestant can submit a maximum of three (3) photos.

o Only color photos are qualified.

o Contestants can enter photos taken using a digital or non-digital camera.

o Entries must be submitted in JPEG format (as .jpg files) and should have a minimum resolution of six megapixels (6MB) or a screen resolution of 3000 x 2000 pixels.

o Digitally altered images will be disqualified.

o Traditional or standard photo enhancing must be limited to only photo resizing.

o Each photo entry should have the following information:
Contestant’s name
Nationality
The category in which you are entering the photo (e.g., Professional, Amateur or Student Category)
Short caption (maximum of four sentences) for the photo that describes the image.
The place where the photo was taken
Date the photo was taken
Contestant’s e-mail address
Home address
Home, office and/or mobile phone numbers
Age
Gender
If a student, name of school, address and contact number. Also include a certification from the head of the school that the contestant is a student of that school.

o The title of the photo must contain the following:
Photographer's name
Image name (title)
Number of the photo entry (1 to 3)

Methods of sending entries can be by post office (snail mail), courier services or e-mail (as attachment).

By e-mail:

Submit the actual image file, not a link or other type of file.

Images should be sent as .jpeg attachment to aseanbiodiversityphoto@yahoo.com with “Photo Contest” in the subject line.

An e-mail should contain one photo entry only.

If an image file is not readable and cannot be downloaded, the entry will be disqualified.


By mail, courier services:

Photos must be stored in a compact disk (CD).

6. Judging

o Eligible entries will be judged according to the following criteria:

Relevance to the theme – 40%

Composition – 20%

Creativity – 20%

Technical excellence – 20%

o A participant can only win once

o The decisions of the judges are final and not subject to appeal.

7. Right to Use Entries

o All entries will not be returned to the contestants and will be retained by ACB after the completion of the contest.

o By joining the photo contest, the photographers grant ACB the non-exclusive right to publish, use, distribute, reproduce and publicly display their photo entries, and to create derivative works from such photographs, in perpetuity, in any of ACB’s on-line, print or other media publications, materials or exhibitions, for purposes of advocating biodiversity Conservation and promoting ACB’s programmes, including, but not limited to, for editorial, advertising, publicity, and fundraising purposes, without payment of compensation unless prohibited by law.

o ACB reserves the right to crop the images, as needed.

o Contestants and winners grant ACB permission to provide their names and countries when publishing, reproducing or otherwise using their photos and when identifying them as an entrant or prize winner in the photo contest.

o The photographer will be properly acknowledged each time his or her photo is used. However, there may be circumstances when it is not possible to do so. Subject to the rights granted ACB, the photographer retains the copyright and all other rights to future use of the photographs entered into the contest.

8.Prizes

A. Professional
1st Prize: $1,500 + travel, meals and accommodation to attend the awarding ceremonies in Singapore
2nd Prize: $1,000
3rd Prize: $700

B. Amateur
1st Prize: $1,000 + travel, meals and accommodation to attend the awarding ceremonies in Singapore
2nd Prize: $750
3rd Prize: $500

C. Student
1st Prize: $1,000 + travel, meals and accommodation to attend the awarding ceremonies in Singapore
2nd Prize: $750
3rd Prize: $500

The first prize winners of the three categories will also be invited to the awarding ceremonies in Singapore. ACB will provide for plane tickets, meals, and accommodations to all first prize winners. However, travel documents, taxes, and other travel-related expenses shall be the responsibility of the winner.

Prizes are not transferable. Cash prizes can be claimed at the ACB Headquarters in the Philippines, or offices of ACB’s National Contact Points in the ASEAN Member States within 60 days from receipt of notification. Winners must present valid identification.

Winners will be notified through phone, e-mail or registered mail by the Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity.

9.Awarding ceremony

For the first prize winners of the three categories, the awarding ceremony will be held in Singapore on 21 October 2009 as a side event of the ASEAN Conference on Biodiversity 2009 (ACB2009).

Other winners may attend the ceremony at their own expense.

For the second and third prize winners, who cannot attend the ceremony, the cash prizes and certificates will be presented by ACB’s Governing Board Member and/or National Contact Point of the ASEAN Member State where the winner is a citizen.
