In my case its not a good deal (for now) to buy a digital back or a MFD. I'm going for vintage cameras and film, if you can get access to a good scanner (an Imacon for example) the quality of the prints and the scans comes out however you want it. But its quite good to now you can finance them like cars and most of all insure them! I can't picture someone stealing a 20,000 dollar Hassey from my hands without having a heart attack or two xP

Revisiting this topic: most medium format digital vendors offer car-like financing plans for the gear, but you also have to take out photographer's insurance to cover the replacement cost of the gear. Adding a rider to a homeowner's policy won't cover gear that is used professionally.

So figure this into your MFD budget: you have to earn enough on paying jobs to cover the monthly cost of the gear and the insurance. If you are smart (or your MFD rep really wants to make the sale) you could roll the cost of the insurance into the financing so at least the first year of coverage is subsidized.

Lets hope medium format goes back to the position it deserves. Never saw the photo quality medium format + scan can give on any digital camera.

Yeah that's the thing with medium format, its extremely expensive. I'm using a Mamiya RB67 with a 220 back and a 127mm lens at the moment to get started with medium format and get a feel of it. Check second hand items, these cameras are work horses and if they are taken care correctly they could last a life time. I was checking out the basic digital Hasselblads in a store here in Madrid and they start around 11,000 euro! Insane...
