Peter, it's not easy to get permission to take your SLR into big concerts - you usually need to obtain a photo pass. These are granted usually by the band's record label and it's their press dept that does it. Alternatively, getting permission for the band's management or even the band personally would do it. The larger the band, the more people want to photograph them so it's gets progressively more difficult. The best way is to be represented by a picture agency. They'll arrange for the pass and try to sell your images for a cut of the action. Alternatively you might work directly for a publication or website but you have to remember the label's job is to get maximum coverage for their artist so if you're not photographing for anybody it can be a battle. In many cases you might be able to go to a band's My Space page and find management contact details right away that gets you an email address for the person you need, but getting a photo pass for a very large concert for a huge international artist requires either a personal connection, an amazing abilit to influence people over the phone or, more likely, a good agency or magazine behind you (and even then they may well have more than you on their books so being signed to a great agency is not a guarantee you'll get any gig you want!) Hope that helps!
