Welcome! This is a new group. I wanted to create a group where you could feel free to explore all the aspects for your D300. Even if you don’t own a D300 you are welcome. I also own and use a D80 as well as various film cameras.

Gina this was taken on the floor of a rainforest where there was plenty of shade. ISO 100, f3.5 shutter speed 1/800. Tamron macro lens on my Nikon D300. I have no trouble getting even higher speeds.

i'm set up correctly and so is lens. it just seems i should be getting faster shutter speeds with a 2.8 lens. i don't like using auto iso. i shoot manual. there is no ec set, etc. just seems like it should be more sensitive. i always felt that from day one. i dunno......

I would first check your lens. On the Aperture ring make sure that it is set so you have 22 lined up with a white line and the lock switch is "locked".
Also make sure you do not have the Exposure set for +2 or +3, it should normally be at 0
Are you using Program, Shutter, Aperture or Manual to use the camera?

Your shutter speed will entirely depend on the amount of light, aperture and ISO, they are all interlinked.
You say indoors at ISO 800 you get a speed of 1/40, well open up the ISO to 1600 and see what shutter speed you get, it should, at a guess be 1/80 but it does depend on how the camera is set up.
On the D300 you can set up Auto ISO, for shooting indoors where you can also set minimum shutter speed.
If this does not help please give more details about the set up, lens type, P,A,S&M modes

does anyone notice that it's hard to get a good shutter speed of even 1/100 even in decent lighting and even at iso400? i'm talking about lighting of, say, a cloudy day around 4pm. i mean it just seems like i should be getting better shutter speeds, especially when i up my iso. if i'm inside with all lights on and iso800, i'm still only getting around 1/40. is this normal? just seems like if this is the case in light, how in the world would it be in darker conditions? oh, and i'm at f2.8. does anyone know of any type of test to check the performance of the iso, like a certain amount of light should equal this and that?

Hi Everyone - I will be going to Las Vegas from the 16 December to the 23 of December to do some workshops on the D300 and TTL flash. Unfortunatley the workshops are only on the 17th and 20th of September. If anyone knows of any other photography workshops on the 18,19,21,22 of December in Vegas please let me know. I have searched on the internet but have come up with nothing on those dates. I would love to get into the Circus Soliel and take photos but I doubt they would let me.

I have only set up one bank and it is very simple.
ISO sensitivity - min shutter 500 and max ISO 800
Dynamic AF Area
Live View
Active D-Lighting (rarely used)
Self Timer Delay
AF-C priority

That is all I need for wildlife as I am always on RAW and manual.

How do you guys all set up your custom shooting banks on your D300's. I have mine set up for good light, poor light, flash and wildlife... but, its so easy to bump ISO up if I need to I think the first three are redundant. I have wildlife set-up to 21 point autofocus with ISO set to auto to 800. Just curious how yours are set up
