Has anyone heard if Nikon will redesign the 80-400mm lens anytime soon? This lens was first introduced nine years ago. This zoom range is perfect for my needs but the old design is putting me off.
Just curious what don't you like about the current lens?
I have the 80-400 ED vr 4.5-5,6
Wish it would focus faster on my d3. My F5 seem to manage the focus much better than my D100,200,300 the d3 is kind of inbetween them. Other than that I am happy with it,
wish it were s type focusing internal silent wave.
I'm just thinking in nine years since it's introduction improvements could be made. As you mentioned AF-S would be nice, internal focusing. Just bringing it up to date would be great. I know these improvements would add a couple hundred bucks to the price, but worth it I think.
I have to agree that an update to speed up the focusing would be welcome. If they could speed up the lens a half stop and make it fixed aperture it would be a birder's dream.
Thanks for your input Doug.
I'd like to get the lens sooner rather than later, so waiting for a redesign could be a big waste of time. I have heard that Nikon has scheduled two press conferences July 30th and August 4th. Maybe some interesting news then.
