So... I just got a new D7000 and I love it. Great camera. I filled up a memory card and plugged it into my Mac. The Mac didn't recognize it. I looked in the box, and there's a CD in there. Hmmm... software? Maybe I better install it - and I do.
Now I've got Nikon View NX2 on my machine. It works. I can download the pics to my hard drive and view the results in NX2. Great... It's a new camera, so I just keep taking pics... I'll play with them later. For now, I'll just keep downloading to my hard drive.
Well... It is now later. I want to process some of them in Photoshop CS5. The problem is, CS5 won't open them. I just get a dialogue box which says:
Could not complete your request because the file appears to be from a camera model which is not supported by the installed version of Camera Raw. Please visit the Camera Raw help documentation for additional information.
Camera Raw help documentation?... Tech-speak for, "This is really complicated and the best we can do right now is provide you with a really vague reference to which we can refer later and say, 'See?... that's the answer, right there.'"
Obviously, that's no help, so I tried to out-smart it. (Fool that I am). Maybe I can open it in Lightroom 2, then move to CS5 and the Mac and Nikon will never know the difference. But they knew. They saw me coming a mile away. LR2 let me import the photos, but when I try to open the folder and view what's inside, I just get the message:
No Photos in Selected Folder.
So, I'm looking for suggestions. A few things to know:
Thanks for any tips.

When you are in CS5, go to help on the menu, click on "updates". It should then check for updates, one of which should be the new ACR file you need. I would just let it install all the updates it finds.
Hope this helps

I hope Skeeter's recommendation works for you - Adobe products will usually update themselves, but you may have this turned-off somehow. If Skeeter's remedy doesn't work though, you can download the Mac version of ACR 6.6 (latest as of Dec. 2011) from Adobe here : http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5311 - for all the CS5 updates for both Win & Mac, see this page : http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates/
One weird note for Windows users: Normally the Windows File Explorer can extract the JPG previews embedded in raw files and display them as thumbnails ... but not for the D7000. No Windows update has corrected this yet, and from what I understand they have no plans to. I predict this will change soon since the D7K has been selling like crazy for over a year now!
I hope you like yours - I love mine!

Thanks so much for the great advice. I was hoping it would turn out to be something simple, and it was. I guess I was looking for updates the wrong way. As soon as I followed Skeeter's suggestion, instant success.
Now I'm back to lovin' the D7000.
Permalink Reply by Richard Allen on January 4, 2012 at 4:01am Did you also receive a CD with Capture NX2 on it as this is the best application for processing Nikon NEF files?
You'll get much better results from NX2 than using CS5.
NX2 also keeps all of the steps used in the processing so that you can go back later and modify any of the steps.
I consider NX2 far superior to CS5 or Lightroom.
Permalink Reply by Skeeter Kortz on January 4, 2012 at 3:34pm David, glad I could help. I didn't think to mention that you should make sure that your version ov NX2 is current (same method, go to help in the Capture NX2 program, click update and follow the instructions. I believe 2.3 is the current version. It is much better than some of the older versions.
