Great question i hope someone gives an answer as i want to know as well. I did some Internet research and from what I understood you do need some software and it is only some models of camera than can do it.
Thanks man hopefully we will get some answers.
The software you aere looking for is Camera Control Pro 2, This software remotely controls most functions of Nikon digital SLRs from a computer that is connected via USB cable or through wired or wireless LAN using a wireless transmitter. Advanced functions of the new Nikon D3 and D300 such as Viewer for preview and selection of images prior to transfer to a computer, Liveview function and Picture Control System are supported. It also supports workflows of Nikon’s exclusive photofinishing software Capture NX (optional) and browser and viewer software ViewNX.

See full description at http://imaging.nikon.com/products/imaging/lineup/software/control_p...

As for the original question on which Nikon camera's it will work with. Nikon's page lists the following.

D3, D300 Supports wired or wireless LAN when used with Wireless Transmitter WT-4.
D2 series (D2H, D2X, D2HS, D2XS) D1 series (D1, D1H, D1X D2X/D2HS/D2XS support wireless LAN when used with the WT-2.
Windows Vista support currently not available Intel Mac: only Mac OS 10.4.9 supported
D200, D100, D80, D70 series (D70, D70S), D50, D40 series (D40, D40X) D200 supports wired or wireless LAN when used with the WT-3.

I have used the trial version on my D90 with no problems. I'm nore interested in the Wifi cards that will wirelessly send the images to your computer.

Hope this helps

Great question. Most all Nikon cameras can be tethered. You can purchase Nikon's software or alternatively visit the following site; http://www.diyphotobits.com/download-diyphotobitscom-camera-control/ The linked page will show you which Nikon models can be tethered and which cannot. Happy shooting.
You are in luck if you have a mac.
Www.sofortbildapp.com have a super free tethering software package for Nikon. Download it now.
I also got a 15' gold coated cable on amazon for $10 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002MWDU9C/ref=ox_ya_oh_product so I was up and running on my MacBook pro and D200.
I used it successfully at the Help-Portrait shoot last weekend. Enjoy!
thanks so much for the info. am going to try the free software.
