sold my d40 to upgrade, which is better: d80 or d500?

D80 second hand if you can get a good, reasonabily used copy, real bargain. Otherwise - D90 is the best option. I had a D60 and I upgraded to D80 - this was my financial limit at the time - but I wish I could have bought a D90 directly...

Hey Ferdie, I would look hard and long at the d90, which is a big step up from the d80. Remember the 90 made the d300 look a bit long in the tooth, which is saying something. You never know, you may even start to enjoy video! Otherwise, I would pick up a used d80 with low miles (clicks). Have fun, I recently moved up from the d70 to d300 and things are good!
So did you upgrade already?

I've got a D80 and I'm absolutely happy with it other than the fact it's a bit rubbish in low light - high ISOs give really noisy, soft images. But it's a cracking camera apart from that. Depends what kind of pictures you want to take maybe?

I feel that the big question you need to answer this question is, Do you already own lens and if so are the all AF-S. The D80 is a great camera and has the auto focus motor in the camera body. This allows you to use almost all current Nikon lens. The D5000 does not have an auto focus motor and you will need AF-s lens.

The D5000 does video and the D80 does not. The D5000 has automatic sensor cleaning and the d80 does not. The D5000 is the newer technolgy and you can get it new at this time. The D80 has the older technolgy and are no longer being manufactured. Both cameras are great but there are some differences.

I bought a D80 body in early October of last year because I already had a couple of very nice Nikon lenses and the D80 would use them -- I have been extremely happy with my choice. I have probably taken nearly 10,000 pictures with it in the last year and some of them amazed me with what I captured. My choice also had a lot to do with what I could afford.
