I bought a 70-300mm 5.6 for my Nikon D90 and I'm not happy as my shots are always darker. What can i do to come up with a good shot using this Lens. Is this really for outdoor shots only. Please help me with the right setting on a manual mode. Many Thanks

Yes f/5.6 is for good light, so indoors I would not use that lens but a f/2.8 or faster.
In manual mode you control the shutter speed and aperture so use the histogram to get the ideal shot.

You have a superb lens for the money, i have also used this lens extensively for studio portraits.
Get a rough idea of the exposure by setting to auto then switching to manual and apply the same settings.
Better still start in aperture prority mode / as somebody else mentioned, keep an eye on the histogram, if your image is too dark then lower the shutter speed / or increase the ISO,
