Hi, I've used today my NIKON D40, with flash DS-400 and had amazing results. I was wandering why pay a fortune for a higher model if the results to me are satisfying?

It's an easy to use camera with fantastic results. I still feel it's the photographer who makes the photo, not the camera.

How do you feel about that? Let me know, and also let me know why you have bought a certain model?

In addition I insert a picture I have made today with the D40 - so you get an idea of the possibilities of this fine camera.

Thanks a lot for your replies - Jan

You're right jann!it's all about the photographer and not on the camera itself.
Me, I've started using mg D40, i like the way it capture pics, or maybe I just really mastered the settings of the cam, but I bought a D80 as for upgrade but I didn't sell my D40, just want to explore the other way of focusing the cam like in d80 I think it has 9 or 11 points of focusing and still now I don't know how to use it..unlike in D40 there is only 3 boxes that you can find for focusing w/c is very convenient and easy for focusing on the subject, the other reason why I bought D80 is because of its 10.2MP w/c is in D40 it has 6MP only, so, I came to the point why don't I try a much better MP to make my shots more beautiful, hehe...last one is...the last time I used my D40. my built in flash just suddenly stop working... and the camera when I click just click...so I have to bring my D40 to the nikon center for surgery(fixing)..hehehhee...but still now I still want to used my D40 after I'll get it fixed. So, Now I have two bodies w/c is also better if you are fanatic hobbyist so that you have always a substitute camera! But now, I'm happy w/ my two cameras and maybe the next thing for me to invest is LENSES..
I think it is an ego thing, and the manufacturers have brain washed the public. Just do the math, a very good image is achieved at 250 pixels/inch, and after 300 ppi, there is NO difference in print quality. So a great image sized to 8X12 is achievable. I typically do 5x7 images, so this allows a fair amount of cropping, while still maintaining a high ppi. Also in theory, given the same size sensor, typically 18x 24 mm, a 6 MP one will do better than a 12 MP one in low light, because of the larger pixel size, hence more light gathering per pixel.
Great detail on the bird! I have been using the D40 for a couple of years, with great results. I thought of upgrading to the D90 for the megapixels and more focal points. This fall I took a workshop with a nationally known Adirondack photographer, and his comment was, if I'm not printing larger than 11x14, I typically print 5x7, its a waste of money. There is too much hype on megapixels being the end all, but the bottom line is the person pressing the shutter button. Its lighting, location, knowledge and luck that makes the shot.
Hey, I am with you. I own a D40 SLR and I love the pictures I take with it. I am sure that one day after I have REALLY learned what I can do with the D40 SLR I may be ready for a new model but for now I am perfectly satisfied with mine.

I am also attaching a few of my favorite photos I have taken with my camera.

You might want to research the D40/D40x about the motor drive in them to work certain lenses. I went from a D50 to a D40x but the D40x was made light and did not have a motor to drive the bigger zoom lenses. I have the Sigma 18 to 200 mm Zoom and their 500 mmm Zoom and my most use lense the Sigma wide angle. There zooms have image stabilization and they deliver great quality. But please check the compatibility with the D40's for all the features on the lenses.
I own once that model and luv to use it. Show me DS400 and be specific about the model. Yq
I know this discussion hasn't been touched in a while, I my self have a d40. I love it. The biggest down fall I can find is the print size. You aren't able to print large images and that to me can sometimes be a drawback. If anyone has any tips on how to print larger prints.. feel free to give me some pointers!

Taken with d40 and 55-200 mm zooms.
I have to agree, I also have a Nikon 40D and I love mine, and I can't remember ever getting a beautiful shot as your bird.
Did you use a different lens with it.
I went from a Point and Shoot and was recommended the 40D and so far I am not ready to trade it in
