THE GROUP.

Nikon has been renowned for high-quality optics and camera equipment since they were founded in 1919. The history of Nikon cameras began in 1948, the year that the Nikon I, the company's first camera was released. Today Nikon continues that legacy with an outstanding line of digital SLR (single lens reflex) cameras including the D90, D300, D800, D3 and the new D3x.

This group is a place for users of all Nikon digital SLR and point-and-shoot cameras to share their experiences, demonstrate techniques through example, and discuss Nikon's latest offerings.

CAUTION: Camera brand debates will not be tolerated in this group. Do not post "Canon vs Nikon or Pentax vs Nikon" threads. Do not ask which camera is better (exceptions on Nikon Cameras only). Discussions of this type will be promptly deleted.

Cheers!~
Maeda

Hello Nikonians. I am new in this group. Currently I have a Nikon D90 and it works great.just to say hi and hello to everyone.

I bought my wife a D3100, I use two D2Xs and D300s and my son uses D80 and a D90. All these camera are superb pieces of kit that do a fantastic job.  It is the purpose of Nikon's marketing departments to make us feel that what we have is not good enough and buy new kit when in truth we have not mastered the equipment we already own.

If we focus on what we have and how best to master that – before bankrupting ourselves on the new"whatever', I suspect we will feel more fulfilled. Unless you are a multi-million corporates such as international newspaper groups, stop dreaming about over priced cameras.  Nikon, Canon and their ilk have priced themselves out of our effective budgets.

The owner of the latest Nikon whatever is the owner of an expensive camera... period. To be a true photographer is to pick up any piece of kit and make phenomenal images, Ansal Adams had basic and rudimentary equipment, who today processes better images with the latest technolog? Very few I would have have guess.

Master what you have and then when it pays for better kit buy what your budget allows.

Fred - thanks - shall post the shots as soon as I get back home from Seychelles where I have some consultancy jobs. Ha! Seychelles! Nice place, nice light, unspoilt land and seascapes! And nice islanders.

Tiberman

Please post some pictures on here of your attempts and let everyone have a look at them. Also try and give full EXIF data of each one.

Nothing wrong with the D7000, nice camera but if you are getting a FX unit make sure all lenses you buy are FX

Fred - perhaps we could drift back to the art - compositions, techniques, basic advice to beginners like myself - I will upgrade from my present D7000 in about 3 years - to somethong FX.

I am working on a shot since 6 months; its a historical anchorage point (to which the coasters were tied); at 18mm, f/8.0, hence 2.0 hyperfocal distance, I just cannot obtain the sharp or reasonably sharp shot I want. Could it be because the 18-105mm kit lens does not perform well for such settings. I have tried recomposing after AE-AF-lock, AF-ON, focussing at infinity etc - all in vain. I have to be  on a small islet at low tide for this important shot, for my book.

Grateful for any suggestions please. Thanks

Nikonly yours

one thing is what designers think and administrator of the mark and something different is how the market acts, leaving the D800 and not many will want to buy other older models obsolete considering them, particularly I would not buy a model that late with respect to the rest of the market in this case the D700 and more if the price difference is not large

Comment by Greg Johnston on February 8, 2012 at 6:44am

The D700 is a great camea for low light, fast shutter, the D800 is not. At about 75 MP per RAW image and 3 fps, the D800 is best suited for landscape, studio and weddings, not sports and low light.  In my opinion, two totally different cameras best suited for totally different uses.

Comment by Fred on February 8, 2012 at 3:44am

I have just received a message that states that the new D800 is not a replacement for the D700, the D800 is a new camera. That is from a Nikon employee who will not pass any more information on but he has promised to send me some files from the D800.
