It doesn't do a lot for me. Most drops are out of focus and the ones that are, are in the middle of the frame.
I had done many similar to this years ago. I always strove to place the film plane (sensor plane) exactly perpendicular to the surface with my 100 2.8 macro lens and stopped down. The need for a tripod allowed me to stop down F/11 or so which required a slower shutter speed.
