Comment by Tracy DePaola on February 1, 2012 at 7:10pm Papa Rotzzi----my daughter was a model and I shoot for Cast Images talent agency in Sacramento, and for STARS--FORD and a few others in the San Francisco area. I also do headshots for the local theatre groups in the Roseville and Sacramento areas. Usually to get the agency to sign you they want to see just regular snap shots, then they have you set up an appointment with a photographer that THEY recommend but you can use any photographer you want. Once the shoot is done the agent will look through the images and post them on their modeling agent site as well as choose the images for the composite card. After that they set you up with different photographers to build the book (portfolio) and you are right about the tear sheets, those go in the portfolio as well. Each a modeling agency works with several clients and they try to get the images of their models to attract those clients for bookings. My daughter's agency wanted the kids to have a SCHOOL LOOK, a Winter LOOK, a Summer LOOK, and a Casual LOOK with each look showing new hair styles and expressions. This model--I messed up because I didn't get enough expressions. Her smile looks almost the same in all her images. She has to come back. I don't know what I was thinking about--brain freez I guess! Anyways the modeling rules are different for kids vs adults and for different areas. It was my daughter's agent in San Francisco and in Sacramento that referred clients to me all the time. That is when my business really began to grow.

Comment by Papa Rotzzi on February 1, 2012 at 6:32pm Tracy, I have very limited experience with agencies, but from what I have seen.. it is all about the "book". A "Comp Card" is usually sent first.. that has 3-5 pictures of various styles of wardrobe and make-up/hair. Then, to any meeting with an agency, you bring the book. That should be a little more like what you would use as a portfolio.A good wide range of your work.. and especially include "tear sheets" showing any previously published work. Many times, you will need to have more than one comp card or book to present to different agencies that specialize in different work.
Comment by Tracy DePaola on February 1, 2012 at 6:18pm Many modeling agencies want a solid simple background, yet other modeling agencies DO NOT want anything that looks like a studio shot, at least when it comes to Child models.
