Dead Vlei Namibia

Deadvlei is a white clay pan located near the more famous salt pan of Sossusvlei and has been claimed to be surrounded by the highest sand dunes in the world, the highest reaching 300-400 meters
The clay pan was formed after rainfall, when the Tsauchab river flooded, creating temporary shallow pools where the abundance of water allowed camel thorn trees to grow. When the climate changed, drought hit the area, and sand dunes encroached on the pan, which blocked the river from the area. The trees died, as there no longer was enough water to survive. The remaining skeletons of the trees, which are believed to be about 900 years old, are now black because the intense sun has scorched them. Though not petrified, the wood does not decompose because it is so dry

One sees so many photos of Sossusvlei that it becomes an every day event. This one is just unique in every sense. The dried out clay in the foreground, the trees (with their shadows!) and the sand dunes make this photo a completely new perspective.

Baie mooi!!

Beautiful simple picture. No clutter and well exposed.   Where is the Tsauchab river?

David,

The elegant simplicity of your image is truly awe inspiring.

I have been an advanced amateur photographer for sixty years, and was teaching photography fifty years ago. In all those years few photos have been as inspiring as this one. I have given up ever being the “best” photographer, but it is still possible that I may create the “best” slide show by taking the best shots from our camera club, the Tri-city Digital Photography Club (over 400 members) and artfully arranging them into a gripping slide show for our club.

I would be honored to add “Dead Vlei Namibia” to the show if you would supply a 1920 X 1080, or larger image that could be cut down to that size for the show. Your original will be deleted after it is entered in the show and I will make no other use of the image, however the “Best Slideshow” may be shown to other public groups. If you are willing please send to jharwick@gmail.com

Even if you chose not to participate, thank you for sharing this marvelous image.

Jack
