Yea, I think I like the tension I feel from the original. It makes me feel as if they are moving apart for a reason. This seems more arbitrary to me. Just my opinion.
i prefer the original - with the walkers facing away from each other. did they stop and talk when they passed each other? are they rushing away from each other? what happened/what was said? why the girl in the light top (seeminlgy) running up the stairs, yet the other person walking down?

Here's a version with the two figures swapped as Ian suggested. It does change the mood of the shot.

This is wonderful. The staircase forms a fine diagonal, and you've made great compositional use of the designs in the tiled surface. I can't help finding myself wishing that the figure towards the bottom was making her way up the steps, while the figure at the top was making his/her way down, because you could then speculate on what might have happened when their paths crossed! All the same, I love it.
