Sunny Hummer I

While filling my bird feeders I noticed the sun catching the crimson throat on this Hummingbird. It was an angle I had not photographed from. I tried to take advantage of the situation.

I know getting these humming bird shots certainly can't be easy since the little creatures are so stinking fast, but you did a great job--very sharp image.

Jenny:

THANK YOU for the note.

However it is my understanding that there has to be existing flowers to attract and then the feeder to keep them there, my understanding anyway.

Been trying for sometime without success, so the frustration level is high and it is time to begin feeding again.

When I first started, the plant store, not Home Depot or the like, I was convinced to buy hibiscus plants, pretty plant but did not work.

Where I live there are no flowering plants close to me at all which makes the problem all the worse.

What flowers do you or neighbors have that help to attract them?

On the Cornell Ornothology site they basically say the opposite, pasting below are the flowers they suggest:

Flowers
Cardinal Flower Lobelia cardinalis
Lantana Lantana camara
Columbine Aguilegia spp.
Fuchsias Fuchsia spp.
Impatiens Impatiens spp.
Coral-Bells Heuchera sanguinea
Hollyhocks Althea spp.
Penstemen Penstemen spp.
Petunia Petunia spp.
Flowering Tobacco Nicotania alata
Geranium Pelargonium spp.
Begonia Begonia spp.

If you have suggestions in attracking, I would love to know.

Mike it is in my backyard.  I make the food myself.  I used the information on this website   http://birding.about.com/od/birdfeeders/a/nectarrecipe.htm

JENNY:

I like.

Been trying to attract them to my backyard for 3 years now, was it yours or do you know what was being used for food?

Thanks,

Mike
