This was a tough shot. I used my 70-300mm lens at 300mm while standing on a small land area surrounded by water. There was no way I could get around to the front of the bird. The rising sun was coming from my left and casting a shadow on the side of the bird facing me. The tree was completely surrounded by water. The bird was only there for about three minutes and then flew away. I did the best I could under the existing conditions. White tailed kites are not common here and I wanted to capture this one the best I could.
If you can, move your position so you are shooting with the sun - this will put light into the birds eyes... very difficult to do but if you know their spots and habits you should be able to pick both the light and the angle.
