Because the model has been replaced, you can pick up one of the remaining Nikon D40's for under $500. Other than that used is the way to go. Just make sure it shots in RAW format, has a good number of lenses available and feels good to hold.

I find it much more appealing to shoot from the same height or even lower than the child's face. Of course it's only a personal preference. There are no "rights or wrongs" in an art like photography. ;-)
