M MODE

I am practicing on M mode a lot more and where I get stuck is when I am taking portraits and the subject moves it gets blurry but when I change my settings it either gets really dark or my shutter speed is to slow, And for the life of me I can not figure out a happy medium. Any help?See More

Hi April. Remember: Your f stop determines the amount of light on your subject. The shutter speed determines the amount of ambient around your subject and the ISO determines how fast the image is processed. So try this. For outdoors set your shutter to 1/125 and ISO at 400 indoors and don’t go any slower than 1/60. This should be fast enough to keep from getting blur. Adjust your f stop till you meter correctly. Also remember every time you divide your ISO by one stop. You add twice the light to your f stop. So if you’re not happy with the type of light or the depth of field try reducing the ISO and re meter the f stop. Exercise: Try putting your camera on a tripod set up a soda can on a table practice shooting it leaving one of the three settings the same and playing with either the f stop shutter speed or the ISO and see what it does! F 2.8 shallow depth of field. F 22 deep depth of field. F 2.8 shutter speed 1/60 bright back ground. F-2.8 shutter 1/200 very dark back ground. Also try adjusting all three to try and get the same results. I hope I didn’t totally confuse you!!!
