i'm pretty much a newbie when it comes to photography but i'd like to think im a natural at it. I always feel so comfortable with a camera in my hand :) macro photos are what i like taking best, but it's quite difficult to take good ones without a professional camera..but i do my best :)
Hi Ashleigh, the aperture is the opening in the LENS, (not the camera} that lets the light from the lens into the shutter opening in the camera. That opening is measured in f-stops, the larger the number, (f/11} for instance, the SMALLER the aperture opening. Use a small number, (f/4) you get a larger aperture opening, which means more light. The aperture also controls the depth-of-field or DOF. DOF is the range in which everything is in focus, front to rear. Let`s say you are shooting a portrait, and you want the model`s face to be sharply focused, but you want the background to be blurred, (out-of-focus). You would focus on her face, with the aperture set for f/4, depending on the lens. The smaller numbers would keep a shallow DOF, larger numbers, (f/11), give a deeper DOF. Remember, the smaller the size of the aperture the less light gets to the shutter, which means the shutter stays open longer, which, in turn means the camera has to be held very still. You said you wanted to get a professional camera. Well, you will get much better results, but it does not make sense to get a good camera, and then keep it on "Automatic". You need to learn every feature on the camera. Many of the pictures you have here are very good, you have a natural talent. I have been making my living as a photographer for over 40 years, I know talent when I see it. Get a good camera, learn to use it, and there is no limit for you. Best wishes, Jim.
