You don't really need a "green" screen, any solid color background will work properly as you can see in my image below. This is my white background with no background light on it. The best way I have found for cutting out the subject…

Ben jones replied to Daniel Chinchay's discussion 'Candid or Posed?' in the group Portraiture
Gary, I agree. I shoot candids at weddings where I seem to have the knack of catching guys picking their noses, or scratching their crotches, and the gals are pulling at their bra straps or stuffing their mouths with too large pieces of wedding…

Agreed with the Paul Buff stuff. Umbrellas are quick and easy to set up/tear down, and muslins take up virtually no room whem compared to seamless paper. I NEVER stuff muslins into a bag like you will hear others proclaim so often. If you fold them…

Great works! 1st has a bit disturbing background, I think less DOF would correct it. the portrait itself is great. Lighting is superb! maybe I would make it a bit harder to accentuate that he's a man already, but he is still a teenager, so…

Ben jones replied to Chris Canute's discussion 'Lenses for portraiture' in the group Portraiture
If you are not planning on making enlargements above an 8 x 10 or so (or if you shoot only for the 'net) up the ISO to 800 or more. That will allow you to use smaller apertures OR use faster shutter speeds hand held. I would opt for faster…

John, The old saying "practice makes perfect" is only partially right. If you practice and practice and don't get someone more qualified than yourself to point out the mistakes you are making, you will simply continue to make the…

Thanks Ben, I see what you mean! I should really buy a light meter to resolve the situation as 'guessing' and trial and error mean more work in lightroom later. The three shots you sent are really good and the level I am aiming to achieve;…

A Couple B&W Studio Portraits

Thumbnail
A couple of head shots.B&W images should have detail in the blacks and clean whites with rich gray tones. It takes a properly exposed color digital file to make a good B&W. Underexposure or overexposure is somewhat easier to "fix" in a B&W but that is not an excuse for not getting it right from the git go.BenjiSee More

Ben jones replied to John Saunders's discussion 'Black and white studio portraits for critique' in the group Portraiture
You needed a reflector to bounce some much needed light back into those black shadows, and a hair light should be your next purchase to keep his dark hair from blending in with the dark background. A good B&W will have rich blacks that show…

Lew, I lit this by using the bounced light from the background as a kicker light then the main light was positioned so it continued the wrap around light. The fill was at camera left. Ben

Ben jones replied to Kristen Hrdlicka's discussion 'Outdoor photography in the rain'
You can't shoot while it is raining because the rain drops soften the image up. The further you are from the subject the worse it will be also. I tried it once and it was really soft and hazy. Ben
