Hey Clare, glad you liked the black background. Its actually really simple. I have a black backdrop and stand setup for it. I took my flash off camera and put it within 2 feet of my subject on a stand and dialed down the power on the flash to about 1/32 and took the shot. The closer your flash is the darker the background regardless of backdrop. I start with 1/200s and play with the fstop to get the proper exposure I'm looking for. I fire the flash with a cybersync wireless transmitter. The one where she is wearing the hoody I used a 22" beauty dish with the flash on full power on the subjects right and on the left a flash with a sto-fen omnibounce on the end at a low power. All fired again with the cybersyncs.
In post processing you already have the black background so you just add some contrast and it darkens even more, or add some black in photoshop.
I also shoot everything in RAW format so I have unlimited editing possibilities with the light.
I have a expodisc that I use at the beginning for white balance. It makes life so easy.

The skies in my photos are almost all HDR, shot with a polarizer (a nice one not cheap). I am trying to get away from using the polarizer because it dulls down the colors on the rest of the photo. On my beach pictures of late I didn't use any polarizer but they are HDR.

Love shots of all your models and or clients and your service for cancer patients. I can really relate to the latter

I appreciate your modesty but the camera is just a brush you are the painter. I give you all the credit. If I am as good as you are in another year or so I won't be giving my equipment very much credit for it : -) lol
