Indoor Portrait lighting

Posted on May 30, 2010 at 11:50am 4 Comments

I am really hesitant when using indoor portrait lighting, it seems no matter how often I try to follow what I was taught, it does not turn out exactly how I intended it. If anyone has any suggestions or tips that worked for them, please please leave a comment on my wall or contact me. I need help and until I get it perfect, I will so not be satisfied with my work. Also, I want to know how everyone first knew when they found the type of Photography work they were meant to do, as in, when did you… Continue

If you're serious about doing indoor studio type portrait work I don't know how you can avoid, or why you would want to, avoid using studio type flashes. They will allow you the flexibility and the power you are needing.

I assume you're questioning about using electronic flash in the camera room. Start with one light and a reflector. Find a VERY tolerant friend or perhaps even use a mannequin. Start with the light on one side (90degrees to the camera) and bring it around toward the camera until you see a light pattern on the face that you like. When you find that spot then begin to add a reflector by bringing it in close to the subject, on the side opposite the light, and watching what happens to the shadow side. When you feel like you have a balance of the two that looks good make an exposure and see if you still like it. Note; There are only two ways to determine the correct exposure with electronic flash; use a flash meter or by distance of the flash to the subject. The light, in this case your main light should be high enough so that it just casts a shadow under the eye socket and off axis with the camera enough so that it casts a shadow inside the bridge of the nose on the side opposite the main light. When you are comfortable with that and can do it with ease you will be ready to work with two lights. When using studio lights, the more lights you use, the more problems you'll have until you really learn how they work and what your lighting style will be. Friend me and then I can talk to you about your experiments in a less public setting.
