- hey John, there are many ways to get a good black and white image from a color digital image. If you use Photoshop the quickest and best way that I use is to use a gradient map. Check out this link for how to do it: Photoshop Essentials: B&W Gradient Map
You can also use the Channel Mixer for more detailed control. This is somewhat more time consuming but it will give you a bit better look-- for example you can make the blue in the sky darker.
In general, simply converting a color image to Greyscale will not give you too much "oompf" in your photos, because you're just losing a lot of color data. Using either the Gradient Map or Channel Mixer converts each color into a different tone.
