Sigma makes great lenses, not as steep as Nikons, I use the 70-200mm F2.8 HSM, picked it up for 500.00, and shoots awesome sports pics, well worth the money, as a matter of fact It's used alot when I do weddings, great lens..

The D300 is great for quick bursts and works well with my Sigma 50-500mm lens but sounds like a machine gun. Don't take this one on a game safari it even has the wild life running for cover :)
