Julie, I got my t2i a year ago last December and love it.  It's an entry level DSLR, but it's enough for me right now.  I've always loved taking picutures, but have only been really serious about it for about the last year.  Canon has come out with a couple of new models since mine. Mine came with two kit lenses, but if I had it to do over again, I'd buy just the camera body and buy my tamron lens separate.  With the 18-270 range of the Tamron, I don't have to worry about changing lenses if I want to zoom or do macro.  It's my all purpose lens and I never change it.  As I know more about what I'm doing, I may want a prime lens, a macro lens, etc., but for right now I'm good with just the one.

As for my editing, I have a Macbook and I use the iphoto software that came with it to edit my pictures.  For some of them, (most of the ones with the brightly colored leaves) I also use an app from the app store called HDRtist that was only $9.99.  It's really simple to use and just enhances the colors in the photos. 

I love taking pictures of my grandchildren too. They are such a joy.
