i wouldn't convert to B+W in camera, why not save your image in raw and convert to B+W in postprocessing with software on your computer or on the web? You have more choices and adjustments in post processing afterward.

Nikon 50mm 1.8 is an excellent quality lens at fantastic value. It will give you the cleanest photos of all your lenses. Problem is, it is not zoom, so not so "convenient". It would be good to get used to using this lens and move forward…
