Here are a couple. The first is a shot of Cincinnati taken from across the Ohio River in Newport, KY. And... a shot taken in Rocky Mountain National Park. A friend was driving and I had to yell at him to stop when I saw how the light was falling on…

I hear.you Dennis. I have two D700s that I love. I have no need for a new camera. The D800 has a lot going for it, but I do not need files three times larger than I use now. If it was around 14mp I would be scheming for it. I do not need video…

I think that these are the only two I have. This is not something I do without a good reason. So here they are: First: "Hot Jazz" And, "Cemetery with Flag"

My take on this is as follows. First, with 36mp I will have to deal with files three times the size. It will slow my work flow and fill up my hard drives. 16mp, like the D4, would have been just fine. Second, I have to pay for video capabilities…

About Me and My Photography Experience:
I recently started my own photography business. My work includes architecture, portrait (corporate, environmental, etc.), product, food, and fine art. I describe myself as a "generalist."

I have been a serious amateur for 40 years with stints in a photo studio, working for a professional photographer, and doing architectural photography while working for a national brick manufacturer.

You can check out additional work at www.pbase.com/mnoble
My Photography Equipment:
All Nikon equipment. Currently have two D700 cameras with the 24-70mm zoom, the 105mm macro, the 70-200 zoom, the 28mm - 300mm zoom, and the 50mm f1.4 prime lens. Both cameras have a battery pack and I use Nikon SB900 strobes with the SU800 infrared commander. I use Manfrotto tripods. One light one with a pan and tilt head and one heavier tripod with a ball head and a Giottos monopod with a Manfrotto ball head. I use Calumet studio strobes with a variety of soft boxes and umbrellas.

A Book Recommendation

Posted on November 24, 2010 at 10:21am 0 Comments

While perusing the racks at Barnes & Noble recently, I came upon a must-have book for photographers. It is

The Great Life Photographers
, produced by Life and published

by Little, Brown and Company. There are hundreds of images packed

into a little more than 600 pages. The reproduction is excellent and

so many of these photographs are gems. …

Attending a Joe McNally Workshop

Posted on July 28, 2010 at 11:30am 4 Comments

What is it worth to be able to spend some time with a person who is renown in

the same field of endeavor - whether avocation or vocation? It's hard to

put a value on it. This past Tuesday, I got to spend some time with one

of our best commercial photographers. Joe McNally has been working with

the likes of Life Magazine, National Geographic, and other clients that

have come to appreciate and rely on his…

New Galleries on-line

Posted on July 16, 2010 at 8:00am 0 Comments

I just put up two, new photo galleries on the pBase Web site. I am

interested in cracking the editorial and photojournalist side of

photography and I think these will be good samples. Let me know what

you think when you get a chance. If you know anyone who might be

interested in this type of photography, feel free to pass it along.

New photojournalism project

Posted on June 26, 2010 at 5:29am 1 Comment

I am beginning a months long project documenting the production of a Lancaster, Pa based opera group from rehearsals through finished performance. I will be producing a book at the end with interviews of the author, composer, principle actors, etc. Of course the photography will be mine.

The original production is Georgia O'Keeffe - A Woman on Paper. It is more musical than opera, with a serious theme. I have attended one rehearsal so far and came away with some good images. I will… Continue

More on the iPad

Posted on May 11, 2010 at 4:33am 4 Comments

The first opportunity to use the iPad with my camera on a real job came up last week. It was a small job with people I've known for a long time so it was the ideal situation to try out the new technology. I was shooting portraits in a rather cramped area and I had a limited amount of time in which to work.

I set my lighting - two Nikon SB900 speedlights - where I thought they should go. The main light with a shoot-through umbrella and the other (lighting the background) with a small… Continue

Thank you Mike for your offer of help with LR3. I appreciate it very much. The Adobe book is pretty good and even though I may be an old dog, I should be able to learn some new tricks. When I get the basics figured out, I'll check back with you on the finer points.

Thanks again and best regards,

Dan

I was afraid that's the one you meant. lol

That's why I was looking at the Sigma 30mm.

As soon as I win the lottery maybe. I've got other things on that list though.

I'm in no hurry right now anyway. Gotta' finish building mu new PC first and I have to send my scanner out for warranty repair too now. An I'm really missing that too.

Just thought I'd ask. Which 35mm were you referring to? The 35mm f 1.8G for $199 or one of the others? Are you familiar with the cheaper one? It was small, light weight plastic.

When I shot film, I had the old Nikon 55mm micro with the extension tube and a complete bellows along with the slide duplicator attachment.

I opted for the new AF 60mm G as I was uncomfortable with the mechanical sounds coming from the digital camera and didn't want to hurt it, plus I have glaucoma in both eyes and permanent optic nerve damage in my right, so I wanted the autofocus.

That old 55 micro sure made me a lot of money though.

Ok, that's exactly what I was thinking. I looked at the Nikon 35mm f 1.8G $199 lens and it's cheap plastic.

I don't like the 35mm f2 D, and would be nice to have the $1800 35mm but not likely.

That's why I was looking at the Sigma 30mm, but I see on You Tube, that people are having problems with that.

Just doing my research here, that's all.

Thanks.

Hi Mike

Let me add, I already have the Nikon Micro 60mm f 2.8 G ED.

Wouldn't it be a bit redundant to get the 50mm f 1.4 G?

Oops, I forgot to say Hi and thank you. lol
At 7:45am on March 10, 2011, Larry Van ValkenburghLarry Van Valkenburgh said…

I kinda' figured that, but thought I'd ask anyway.

I'm shooting a D300 and a D200 and that lens might end up being like a 75mm aprox.

So, I've also been looking at Nikon 35mm and the Sigma 30mm lenses also.

Funny with my film cameras, I almost never used the 50mm, but did occasionally use a 28mm.

At 7:23am on March 10, 2011, Larry Van ValkenburghLarry Van Valkenburgh said…

Question.

Which Nikon 50mm f 1.4 lens are you using? G or D ?

Thanks....Larry V.V.

G'day Mike. I came across your WW11 photos when surfin' the Nikon group. Great photos, I have to admit I'm a bit partial to the look of the women from the 40's & 50's , great stuff. All this led me to your profile- I've looked and read and been absolutely knocked out by your photography- but then again I shouldn't be surprised when I see the amount of years and experience that you have.
I'm just an amateur, not sure of my direction, but I think I can recognise quality of simplicity that many of us wannabe's would aspire to. Regards, CJ.
