I spent the best part of last Sunday photographing a jazz group rehearsing. I used the D700 and three lenses - the 70-200 (on a tripod), the 50mm f1.4, and the 24-70mm. Also used a SB900 speedlight for some of the pix to throw some additional light.…

Back in the day you used to actually get a lens with your camera body and it was usually a 50mm f1.8 lens. Often called a "normal" lens. The 50mm focal length approximates what you see with your eyes - not the viewing angle, but the magnification. L…

Remember one thing. Lightroom 3 is a public BETA software. Not ready for prime time. You should not use it for your work. Test it out separately.

I have the 105mm f2. lens. I love it. It has 1:1 macro capability and is an excellent portrait lens. Highly recommended. Good luck. Mike

For Valters..... You said you wanted a fast, prime lens (fixed focal length) for portraits. I would suggest the Nikkor 85mm f1.4 lens. (http://www.nikonusa.com/Find-Your-Nikon/Product/Camera-Lenses/1933/AF-NIKKOR-85mm-f%252F1.4D-IF.html) You didn't…

Cyn, Hadn't thought about it. When is it?

I would recommend the 12-60 f2.8 Zuiko. When I was shooting with Olympus that was my work horse. Great optics, sharp and relatively fast. It took care of 80% of my needs.

One more thing. I recently signed up for NAPP's on line training. It's a year's subscription. As an incentive for spending money with them I received two Scott Kelby books that I can highly recommend. On on Adobe Lightroom 2 and the other Adobe Phot…

Re: Lightroom I have both Lightroom 2.6 and CS4 PS. They basically have the same RAW editing engine. I like LR because everything is immediately accessible on the right hand panel. So as far as processing and editing RAW images, LR gets the nod. How…

Last Thursday and Friday I got to photograph a military reenactment held at Fort Indiantown Gap near Annville, PA. This was a Battle of the Bulge reenactment. It is not open to the public. I had to request a press pass which was granted. I did all…

I'm thinking about a Photowalk in the early spring. Chinatown and the Reading Terminal Market. Hopefully we will get some participation from this group. I will let you know when. I guess it takes someone from Berks County to get things going in Phil…

Sensor Cleaning. Scary boys and girsl!

My Nikon D700 has been picking up dirt on the full frame sensor to the point that I felt I needed do do something about it. I am a little disappointed that the internal sensor cleaning action in the camera wasn't keeping this to a minimum. The sensor cleaning on my Olympus E3 was much better.

Before I tried cleaning the sensor I read a great deal about it. It is definitely a scary undertaking. Nikon recommends professional cleaning (theirs, of course) and if you screw it up, you void t… Continue

Taking the right equipment

Over the Thanksgiving holiday, our daughter's family came to visit. We had a great Thanksgiving meal and, on Thursday, our son-in-law, Joe, headed to deer camp for some testosteronal bonding. On Saturday we planned to take the kids, Jackson and Mikey, to Strasburg, PA to ride on the Santa Express. Of course, I was going to bring a camera.

I had both cameras out (D700 and D300s) to test out the Cotton Carrier (more on that at another time). The cameras look very similar. I had the 24-70mm on the… Continue

Using Lightroom

Before Adobe actually brought Lightroom to the market, it made the Beta version available to the public in order to get their feedback about the software. I took advantage of Adobe's offer and began working with the Beta version. I have stuck with Lightroom and now am up to v 2.5 and looking to download the 3.0 beta.

For the last year or so, I really didn't use Lightroom as my primary image editing software. I used it to convert my RAW files to DNG, Adobe's universal RAW format, and to do some… Continue

New Tripod

This past week I invested in a more substantial tripod. I have a Manfrotto tripod with a pan and tilt head that I bought a number of years ago. The tripod is great and, at the time, what I could afford. It was a combo deal at B&H Photo. The tripod is light and easy to carry around. However, at any serious extension, it is a bit shaky and the pan and tilt head is sort of fussy. But the build quality is excellent and it has served faithfully and will continue to do so.

All this notwithstandin… Continue

Photographing the Civil War

This past weekend (October 17-18), I went down to Middletown, VA to photograph the 145th anniversary reenactment of the Battle of Cedar Creek. This battle occurred later in the war and pitted Jubal Early against Phil Sheridan. There was a sizable turnout of participants even thought the weather was cold and sometimes rainy.

The battlefield itself was sizable and I walked a great deal to cover as much as possible. My goal is to channel Matthew Brady as if he were a correspondence with today's di… Continue

Hello Mike,
I really like your photos of battle of the buldge. I would like to know if you shot these photos in b&w or color and then do a conversion. Also did you use a tripod?
I also use LR and find it an invaluable tool for photography.

That's an excellent point. I can't find DX anywhere on the lenses so I have to do more research to see if mine will utilize the 700's full capacity. Doesn't make sense to spend that kind of money only to have the lens dumb-down the camera. If you had to choose only one would it be the 700?
Many thanks again for your time!

Mike - I am new to this site and have joined to listen and learn and become the best photographer I can be. I read that you photographed a civil war reenactment in Oct with both a D700 and D300s. I have been researching these two cameras and am struggling with a purchase decision. Would you be willing to offer any advice? Does one work better in certain situations? I currently own AF 70/300mm and 28/200 nikkor lenses for use with a D50. Thank you in advance for your time and opinions.

That's an awesome book you've made!Which one is a better one to order, the Dust Jacket or the image wrap? I have that Blurb software, but haven't used it yet and have wondered how they turn out. Besides the fact that I like your book, I may order one to see the quality and construction. The price is excellent. What is your cost to make it and how much profit are you making?
You can answer those privately if you like at cowboystuff@verizon.net
Thanks, Larry V.V.
