The D300S is fairly new. Not sure there will be a replacement for a while. I am waiting for the next iteration of the D700. I love mine and long for a second full frame. My D300S doesn't quite cut it.

Karen, check out Joe McNally's blog and site. He is an expert in the use of speed lights and the Nikon CLS. I have to SB900 and the SU800 commander unit. I use these and a good reflector for great results. See my blog (www.mikenoblephotography.blogs

I bought my Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8 zoom lens used. However, I got it from a trusted vendor (B&H Photo). I have been completely satisfied with it. I would always consider a used lens from the "right" vendor. They usually have some kind of rating system…

Mehryar, if you really need to shoot at high ISOs, you should consider a full size sensor camera like the D700. I have both the D300S and the D700. Compared to each other the D700 is considerably better with low light and high ISO. I think that goin…

That is really cool, Mike. Thanks for sharing the experience. From everything I have seen and heard, Joe is one of those rare photographers that share the passion for the art and does not treat his knowledge like some kind of state secret!

It must have been a wonderful days experience to work with Joe. I often see him on Down Town TV, giving out lots of tips but to actually meet him and learn from him. Maybe wen he visits the UK I will sign on the dotted line.

Thanks for sharing, sounds like you do not even need Nikon Camera Control Pro, or Tether Pro for this to work!!

I upgraded to LR 3 the day it came out. I had the beta version so knew what to expect. My favorite feature? I think that it must be the improved noise reduction. It works very well. VERY WELL! In general this version is quite an improvement and I am…

New photojournalism project

I am beginning a months long project documenting the production of a Lancaster, Pa based opera group from rehearsals through finished performance. I will be producing a book at the end with interviews of the author, composer, principle actors, etc. Of course the photography will be mine.

The original production is Georgia O'Keeffe - A Woman on Paper. It is more musical than opera, with a serious theme. I have attended one rehearsal so far and came away with some good images. I will do… Continue

More on the iPad

The first opportunity to use the iPad with my camera on a real job came up last week. It was a small job with people I've known for a long time so it was the ideal situation to try out the new technology. I was shooting portraits in a rather cramped area and I had a limited amount of time in which to work.

I set my lighting - two Nikon SB900 speedlights - where I thought they should go. The main light with a shoot-through umbrella and the other (lighting the background) with a small Las… Continue

THe iPad has arrived! And, Guess what?

In my last blog, I promised to get back to you to let you know how the iPad worked with my cameras. I believed that with Apple's Camera Connection Kit I could tether the iPad directly to the camera and transfer files as I shot. I was counting on this although it would not have been a deal-breaker if it didn't work.

I got the iPad last week. BTW, you can track the travels of your iPad from China to Hong Kong to Anchorage, AK, Indiannapolis, IN, Allentown, PA and then Reading. Of course… Continue

G'day Mike. I came across your WW11 photos when surfin' the Nikon group. Great photos, I have to admit I'm a bit partial to the look of the women from the 40's & 50's , great stuff. All this led me to your profile- I've looked and read and been absolutely knocked out by your photography- but then again I shouldn't be surprised when I see the amount of years and experience that you have.
I'm just an amateur, not sure of my direction, but I think I can recognise quality of simplicity that many of us wannabe's would aspire to. Regards, CJ.

Hello Mike,
I really like your photos of battle of the buldge. I would like to know if you shot these photos in b&w or color and then do a conversion. Also did you use a tripod?
I also use LR and find it an invaluable tool for photography.

That's an excellent point. I can't find DX anywhere on the lenses so I have to do more research to see if mine will utilize the 700's full capacity. Doesn't make sense to spend that kind of money only to have the lens dumb-down the camera. If you had to choose only one would it be the 700?
Many thanks again for your time!

Mike - I am new to this site and have joined to listen and learn and become the best photographer I can be. I read that you photographed a civil war reenactment in Oct with both a D700 and D300s. I have been researching these two cameras and am struggling with a purchase decision. Would you be willing to offer any advice? Does one work better in certain situations? I currently own AF 70/300mm and 28/200 nikkor lenses for use with a D50. Thank you in advance for your time and opinions.

That's an awesome book you've made!Which one is a better one to order, the Dust Jacket or the image wrap? I have that Blurb software, but haven't used it yet and have wondered how they turn out. Besides the fact that I like your book, I may order one to see the quality and construction. The price is excellent. What is your cost to make it and how much profit are you making?
You can answer those privately if you like at cowboystuff@verizon.net
Thanks, Larry V.V.
