Would I be correct in thinking that aperture works like pupil in my eye?  Can anyone recommend a book or website to me which gives me information on how lenses work?  Cheers, Neil. Continue

Hi, long time since I've uploaded any photos but I'd just like to say that I've been out practicing a lot and I'm glad that I've now started using Manual mode - about time to!  I can't believe that…Continue

"You can get reasonable results with fairly modest equipment and some cropping if the goal is a smaller image, like the web. This is the original JPG, probably converted from raw using DPP.  It was taken with an 8 Mpx, Canon 30D, and Sigma…"

"Hi Neil, the bee is only occupying around 5 percent of the image space - if you are going to center the subject it's a better idea to fill the frame with it by cropping in. As dedicated Macro lens will give you the 1:1 ratio needed usually with…"

"First you need to get a lot closer Neil, fill the frame with the bee if possible, best done with a true macro lens. Not easy to get a good sharp image in the garden with things moving. "

Profile Information

About Me and My Photography Experience:
Hi, I've just taken photography up. I'm interested in agriculture, wildlife, landscapes and abstract shots. I'm still playing around with the camera and have joined this site for some help and guidance.
My Photography Equipment:
Canon 500D. Standard 18-55mm lens which came with it and I also purchased a 70-300mm Sigma Macro lens. I have bought a tripod. And a bag to carry all that in. So, that's me for the moment. Wont be spending anymore until I've got to grips with what I've got!

Neil,  If you can use the information that's great.  I am always glad to be of assistance.  Check out the "Time Life" series.  It is the most definitive series on photography that I'm aware of, even though the illustrations are a little dated.  Sorry for getting "into it" on your question.  I've been doing commercial work for over 30 years and teaching it at university level for 25.  I get a little annoyed when partially correct, or patently false, information is posted.

 Hey Neil

To answer your question about the snail ... Well the thing about macro is that the DOF is very shallow..  Im new at macro but if I understand your question, that you want the whole leaf to be in focus. You need a VERY small apperture and you need to get further away from the subject than I am in my picture..

^^^ that website can help you

Kind Regards

Hi,

The railway bridge is near to my house and a very dangerous place to be. A train passes by every 5 -10 minutes. So I accompanied my brother to keep a watch while I am busy taking photos.

Neil, to capture "Baby's Breath" I used a very shallow depth of field. Really appreciate your comments!
