"A Nikon-equipped friend of mine has said that the difference between the 1.4 & 1.8 version of the 50mm prime was barely noticeable and not worth the price difference.

There are plenty of examples in photograph magazines with people using 5 year old cameras and taking incredible shots. With equipment, the lens, not the camera body, is most important.
