To Buy or Not To Buy?

I read recently that the Canon 50mm 1.8 lens is worth sporting the modest sum of under £100 on. Yes, it's plastic but reports say that the glass is good and that the 'nifty fifty' is a useful…Continue

1. Shoot Raw in manual 2. Set ISO 100 cloudy days 3. Set ISO 200 sunny days 4. Set metering for spot metering and check your exposure and set for your shot. 5. Nobody prints pictures right out of the camra, 6. get some software, Lighrroom, PhaseOne,…

Check your JPG processing settings in-camera. They might be completely turned down on sharpness/color/contrast. That's a good first step. Then figure out light! That never hurts.

My opinion is that lens you are using is not the best lens. It may be problem. I can see picture style you have used (standard, which is low on colours) and also i do not think it was a good idea to shot the picture in JPEG. Next time try RAW…

I am going on holiday to Greece at the end of this month and will be taking my 50D plus 18-270 zoom, 90mm 2.8 macro and 1.8 50mm. I have a Kata 3N1-20 but it is a bit big to go walking with. Any thoughts on a bag I could buy that will take my kit…

I am also looking towards buying a Canon 50mm lense. But I personally, would prefer the f1.4 Yes, it costs more, but in the long run... it IS better quality, and it will last me years. I don't think I'd want to upgrade to the f1.2 (that…

I have mainly been shooting in Faithful with the four parameters linked to it tweaked slightly. Occasionally I switch to one of the picture modes as a comparison with my chosen settings. I'm not sure of my friend's settings on his Nikon…

Are you shooting in faithful, setting or some other setting?

In terms of next lens, I'm missing hugely my wideangle. I moved from Canon to Nikon last year and traded in all of Canon lens, including my lovely wideangle = It just gave such stunning images that had a really different feel to anything mid…

It's a wonderful lens! The optical quality is superb, it is easy to walk around with, and it also functions somewhat as a close-focus lens on a digital camera with a 1.6 factor because the effective focal length is 80 mm, but it still focuses…

It is definetely worth the money. I have had my "nifty fifty" for over a year and it is holding up great. Best under $100 bang for the buck!

I bought it a couple of month ago. I like it. It makes clean images. It doesn't seem as cheap as some people have reported. The bokeh is nice, not great. But it is a fun little lens to have.

To Buy or Not To Buy?

I read recently that the Canon 50mm 1.8 lens is worth sporting the modest sum of under £100 on. Yes, it's plastic but reports say that the glass is good and that the 'nifty fifty' is a useful addition to the camera bag. The cost is small but is it just a waste of money that could be put towards a saving fund towards a more expensive piece of glass? On that subject, I currently have Tamron 18-270 (which has been commented on already here) and Tamron 90mm 2.8 lenses. My interests are mainly…See More

Thanks for the reply, Ed. My friend has had his Nikon D80 for a few years now; I would guess at 3 or 4. I bought my 50D last November and am still getting accustomed to all the controls and settings; I guess that is just a question of practise and…

Many thanks, Richard, for taking the time to reply at length. My friend's lenses for the day were his Sigma 120-400 4.5-5.6 VR for the birds and his Nikon 18-200 4.5-5.6 VR. He is going to send me a couple of shots so that I can compare them…

One thing to consider is how long you have had your 50D verses how long your friend has had his D80. Perhaps even more crucial would be a comparison of the lenses used as well. I believe a lot of the comments here so far, though there are many have…
