This looks like a Mourning Dove - a very unreliable bird at best. This is why we have digital cameras - to erase the ones that didn't work. Keep trying - eventually one of them will make a mistake and you'll get your shot.

To improve these type of images further you could use a 2 stop graduated filter on the camera to help reveal some detail in the foreground.
