the 'real' jamaica
shortly after arriving in jamaica in oct of 2006, where my partner and i are volunteering, i became aware of how different the image of jamaica presented by the tourist industry is from the reality that exists in this country. when you step outside the carefully constructed constraints of the mega hotel chains you see a third world country struggling with poverty, crime and corruption. you also see people with a lot of heart, trying to live amidst the problems all round them.
and aside from the beaches, which are pretty darned glorious, jamaica is a stunningly beautiful country. unfortunately most visitors don't get to see that part either.
coming from the afluence and relative ease of life in canada, i am often rocked by this country and these people, and have endeavored to present the 'real' jamaica as i see it.
