Hello again, I advise a 18-200 mm lens - it gives you everything you need. Also try to buy a simple 50 mm. lens (f 1,8) - great lens in a lot of circumstances, it learns you to be creative in composition and even works in very poor circumstances.

Always look for a lens with a motor in it, the Nikon D40 has no motor in the body to drive the lenses.

Also very good is a 70-300 mm lens with Macro (for a few hundred dollars) from Sigmar or Tamron. Again check if they will work with you D40, otherwise you will have to focus by hand, and that is not what you want from an expensive lens.

I can really advice this fine article that shows you every secret of your camera and much more. It isn't to expensive and worth every penny. This will take you to the next level.

Excellent photos Leah. Hope you enjoy using your new camera. A lens you may want to consider the new 35mm 1.8 DX. You can shoot in low light without a flash and it's very sharp. But you have a good eye for composition and light, which is more important than any lens.
