When I was last in Europe, at the tender age of twenty-three and prior to the emergence of my inner photographer, I carried with me a Kodak 110mm Pocket Instamatic camera and usually 1-2 spare rolls of film. That was the total summation of my photography equipment. The camera was about the size of a checkbook,,,and this was before the miniaturization-revolution of all things electronic occurred...so the resolution of the pictures sucked. It didn't help matters that I kept it tied to the outside of my backpack so that it could endure every physical insult European cities and I could offer.
Needless to say that those photos are some of my most prized and treasured.
Things are a bit different today. Today, small isn't at all necessarily a bad thing and cameras the size of credit cards can take awesome pictures. But alas, that will not be the case with me. This time, I am knowingly overcompensating and going heavy...here's what's in my bag, baby:
-Camera body, battery & spare, charger
-18 - 70mm lens
-55- 200mm lens
-circular polarizing filter
- small gear bag
-10 megapix point & shoot camera, battery & charger
- small video camera, battery & charger
- tripod ?
- monopod
- laptop, card reader, battery & charger
- at least 1 gig of memory per day of trip
Frankly, I don't think that's too much. The camera, lenses and video camera all fit into a fanny pack style equipment bag. the point and shoot can go in any pocket (and I was thinking of letting my wife or one of the girls record the trip from their perspective with that one). The laptop has it's own bag. And I have all the cables and chargers in one toiletry bag. So that leaves just the monopod and tripod. Not too bad, I think. What do you think?
I do have a couple of concerns though...
1) I don't want to look like "equipment guy". I'm not an inexperienced traveler and know that it is best not to draw too much attention to one self. I envision most of the time just having my one camera bag, and using the monopod/tripod when hiking. I also think that I will carry the equipment and my wife the money.
2) Leave my other gear in the hotel or car on day trips? Guess I'll play this one by ear.
3) I am planning to check the tripod, all the cords, cables, chargers, etc. and carry the cameras and laptop on board.
Anything equipment wise or precaution wise I'm overlooking?
