The Photography Network - PictureSocial

Have just rediscovered the site and hope to become a regular. Since joining I moved from Maryland here to Tampa Bay and have been pursuing a degree in Digital Photography from IADT Tampa. Have one term left in which I will be putting together my portfolio. I am interested in taking enviornmental character portraits of people, pets, nature, and travel photography. I am still in the process of starting my own business which is called Stephaniellen Photography.
I have taken courses in many different styles of photography over the last 16 months: Portrait, Still Life, Wedding, Commercial, Photojournalism, Photoshop,Fashion etc and learned a great deal. Looking for opportunities as 2nd shooter on weddings, assistng on other shoots etc in Tampa Bay area.
I love Photoshop and am continually looking to improve my skills in this area as well. I will be at Photoshop World in Orlando this March. Will be upgrading from Canon 40d to Canon 7d this week and am very excited.
Other things about me, love nature and the outdoors, yoga, reading, travel and dogs. Love Tampa but have not been enjoying weather lately. I am also looking for people to model for me to help with my portfolio fyi.
Stephanie :)

Hi Stephanie, welcome back and congratulations on your continuing education.

A portfolio is a really necessary asset for any photographer but, often two or three different portfolios work better. If you are going for a wedding shoot gig, showing images of macro photos and wild animals will not cut the mustard. You need wedding/engagement type photos to secure that type of contract. Almost as important as the quality of the portfolio imagery is a professional presentation of the portfolio - either in hard copy prints or on-line.

Additionally, every bit as important as photographic talent in running a commercial photo business is the actual business skill required. That is, IMO, where many photographers fall on their swords. They can take decent pictures but, they cannot effectively market themselves and run a paying business.

Finally, a pair of cameras is essential equipment for a paying gig. A professional cannot miss out on coverage due to equipment failure. You need back up for all your equipment.

Murphy's Law of Photography: "The probability of equipment failure is in a direct relationship to the importance of the shoot and in an indirect relationship to the availability of back-up equipment!"
