Yesterday I began the Advanced Photography Program at Sheridan College. I learned things about Photography from the teacher that had been in my mind, but had never been able to put into words before, yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting such a great person with such vision and emotion.
He put into words all that I have been feeling about photography but had never been able to express before. I learned yesterday that Photography is so much more then just taking a picture, anyone can take a picture, but how many can honestly say that the pictures they take ignite emotion in others. I learned that before you pick up your camera to take that shot of the beautiful sunset, the old homeless man sitting on the street cold and lost, you must truly understand what has caused you to stop and want to photograph the subject. Why? What is your reason for it, and when you have pondered this and truly understand your reasoning behind the photograph, only then should you pick up your camera and capture that moment....
Capture the moment understand the picture, cause goosebumps in others when they look at your shots, only then can you fully appreciate and understand the true meaning of Photography.....

Please feel free to give your insight on Emotional Photography, I would love to read your thoughts on it

Hey Monica, Sounds like a great course and teacher. I think the best way to photograph lies somewhere between your philosophy and Adam's. If a scene evokes an emotion in me I go with that and slow my thoughts down just enough to contemplate how best to expose it. Especially with digital, I go with the flow and tend toover shoot, so as not to lose the shot/moment. Then later, I sort through what my feelings were at that time and keep only the ones that express those feelings the best.

A friend of mine while out hiking one day said to me, while I was composing a shot of a small creek, "Try to capture the sound of the water babbling over the rocks". That simple statement has been my mantra and that has been my goal when out shooting.

Cool that you are at college, so am i, but i think capturing emotion is a hard thing to do, if you think why am i taking this, then by the time that happens, you would have missed the shot, there is so many ways to capture emotion, i think if you know what you want to capture before you go out to take pictures, stand there the world will move in front of you, then just capture that moment, i dont think its good to think about it at that moment becouse you will miss it, its like should i take the picture?
By the time you have thought that, you have missed it, thats just my view though

I love capturing the raw emotion of a photograph. To study the subject beforehand and become aware of my own triggered emotions of taking this shot. How does this subject make me feel, what emotions does it evoke in me and subsequently in the viewer of the finished print? Why do I want to take this phtograph? What message will it give to others?

If it was just about the fun of snapping pictures, I'd buy a polaroid...lol

I too, have expressed my thoughts and feelings when i tried to capture the moments. Being able to share what my eyes have seen through my photos, which somehow interprets what my mind has conceived.
