Feel free to crit as you see fit - my pp skills are limited and, whilst happy with the subject, composition and general image, the blue in the waves bothers me, but changing white balance seems to spoil the overall look. Can I do something in either Elements or Lightroom to improve things?

All adds interest and extends ones horizons Anon, that's what I like about the forum. Aside, I've been following your discussion with Robert regarding Bokeh and Circles of Confusion with interest - you guys have an admirable depth of knowledge.

I agree, the one I posted is "overcooked", especially cropped tighter as I did.  The board and rider look too rough.  I got carried away trying to emphasize the waves ... almost have them looking like one of those dramatic Oriental prints.

Many times my edits tend to push limits ... exploring possible directions rather than showing what I'd consider a "perfect destination" .... Maybe "ideas" rather than "conclusions".

Thanks for your suggestion Anon, but it looks a bit 'overcooked' on my screen - may be better on yours of course, either way, your help always appreciated.

Maybe something like ....

Yes, I think that more accurately represents the day Camerclicker - it was evenly overcast with sunshine occasionally brightening the sky without breaking through (then losing the battle to rain again) - the shot was almost certainly one of those bright moments. Here's another that shows the light at the time much as I remember it - and also the conditions!

If I were setting white balance, typically I would use a raw file, and would use something either known white or known black.  The result of doing that looks like this

This is a totally different look than what you posted.  What is your memory of the weather and light?  Is this more accurate?  Is it more or less pleasing?

Camerclicker, certainly better but still rather blue on my screen - I should add I only have a laptop at the moment, which may not be too colour accurate. Thanks for taking the trouble with it, much appreciated and I will attempt more myself as soon as I'm confident enough.

Camerclicker, thanks for commenting - I'd be very happy for you to adjust - as you can see from my answer to John, I'm only just getting into serious pp. I do assure you it is a single photograph - taken in quite extreme weather conditions with winds up to 50mph, there were only three guys good enough to brave the seas on that day. I was propped against an old wartime 'pillbox' defence and struggled to stay upright, it could be the wind affecting direction of spray.

I think that's an improvement John, looks to have lost a little brightness in the whites, but the hue is better and I would accept the loss of sparkle in the waves in preference to the better colour. Thank you for your efforts, much appreciated. I start a Lightroom course later this month so we'll see what I can achieve in due course!
