Why i hate photography...read on...

I hate photography. I hate that sinking feeling when you’ve done all the Photoshop work you can think of and the photo still looks dull. I hate that, “Wow, that would’ve been a great shot” feeling. I hate the limitations of the viewfinder, that black barrier that cuts all peripheral vision. I hate loading that awesome photo, only to find that someone stepped into the frame with their shorts and Hawaiian shirt. And I hate the fact that all your photos look better than mine…

But I love the fact that I can merge three photos of different exposures to create a blaze of colour and light. I love the little handheld that captures so many spur of the moment shots. I love love love my fisheye lens that sees so much beyond the viewfinder’s eyes. I love Photoshop, that which allows me to clone and erase and eradicate that horrible shirt and those disgusting knees sticking out of the shorts. And I love the feeling of friendly competition and enthusiastic encouragement that flow from these pages…

Amen! Yesterday I entered a photo contest ,in a nearby town. I took what I thought was some of my best work. The gentleman in the gallery briefly glanced at the photos an then in a "pseudo "British accent proceeded to tell me I did not have the picture wire on correctly., fortunately another man standing by came to my recue and put on the wire so we were all happy . I had driven 35 miles and was going to scrap the whole thing. I went off secretly smiling to myself. because today I have 4 pictures in the highest rated section of picturesocial and I am a definite newby! Moral, believe in youself and believe in challenge. You are most welcome, it is a shame I had to get to this age to figure it out. I really enjoy your photos and will comment specifically when I get a moment.

Photography is a hobby of isolation. Even when you're with someone it's ultimately you, the camera and the subject. If the shot doesn't come off, the subject and the camera are usually blameless (although I HAVE used some terrible cameras in my time). Ultimately if the photo fails, the photographer is to blame. WE are to blame. And that can be a lonely state to be in.

Yet, to be positive, it is also exhilarating...because when it works...when the photo screams its WOW factor, WE WIN...and that's the BEST state to be in.

Thanks from me too Imanwel MS. I have been known to dabble with words, both as short stories and poetry (I've managed to get a few published). One of my ambitions has been to illustrate my poems with photographs...or visa versa. Just need to find the correct inspiration

When I was Doing 35 mm photography most of what I felt was frustration, but I Took an evening job for a photo company that did primarily event photography, in order to train myself to shoot enough frames to assure that I could cover for the unexpected and the miscalculated. I Still do this With digital which give me enough frames and angles to get the shot I envisioned when I first saw the scene. I'm not saying that you need to do that but it works for me and I don't have to worry about trying to salvage the throw-a-ways.
I'm often wrong but never in doubt.

I'm the same - each subject has a minimum of three shots - one under exposed, one over exposed and one in the middle. On continuous shooting I'll vary the angle slightly with each shot.

It's nice to be free of the fear that I'm wasting film.

After writing about linking photographs and words I decided to create a group to do just that

Jadeast, Hi Thanks for you insight, I think the digital is the best thing that got me to try again. I am embarrassed to say it was the thow aways and Wal Mart developers. that turned me away, I mean if you have one bad photos why would you want two ! Digital is thrifty for me . Delete and press on!
