I NEED HELP..Canon or Nikon?

Hi peeps. Im rb, a newbie here. Anyways, will somebody (if not everybody) help me decide on which DSLR to buy? I need an honest, objective opinion here. Ok, I'm a film SLR hobbyist/enthusiast. Now, with all the hypes/technologies/post-processing tools & techniques out there, I already feel the need of buying an entry-level DSLR. Now, I'm thorn between Nikon & Canon (which by the way is very common, lol). Im considering these factors: (1) Should I buy either of the two, which brand has the most affordable "carry-around" lenses? Oh, I'm not planning to make this a career in the near future. So I don't wanna buy different kinds of lenses for every type of photographs. What I just really intend is just to have an "all-around" lenses for my everyday life. You know what I mean? I hope. (2) Low-maintenance. Which brand has the most available and cheap parts? I hope you guys can help me. Thank you ssoooo much in advance..

Hi,

I would say first look at you budget to determine a price range you can afford. But even if money is no object...say the Canon xsi or the Nikon 60D in general they are more similar than different.

Neither of them are bad.

Sometimes it is a good idea to handle them, because the choice often becomes a lot clearer when you've hold them.

Also map out a lens purchase first, this might help you to decide which body is more ideal.

Hi Horst. Thank you for your response. Yeah, I'm considering both. I think I've saved enough to buy a new DSLR. However, my "main" concern is which of the two brands has the cheapest "all-around" lens? I dont wanna buy different lenses for different photo types. It's painful in my pocket lol. Just an all-around lens that could shoot good portraits, as well as landscapes. And one more what lens would you advise for me? On my film SLR, I just use the kit lens (18-55mm).

I have always shot with Canon cameras, but I have heard great things about Nikon as well. I agree with Horst, if you got either the Canon XSi or the Nikon D60 you would be ending up with a great camera.

My opinion is that there is no All Around Lense.
If you ask me, i will tell you 18-200 is the best deal. By the way, why dont you consider buying a compatible lense? There are plenty, and at great prices as well.
My camera (Canon EOS 350 D) came with a 18-55, which i dont use because i find my 18-200 more convenient for street photography.

And, if you buy 350 D, dont forget to buy a battery grip as well. The cameras grip is too small for male hands

Don't rule out other makes - I have an Olympus e-510 and it is a phenomenal camera

don't you think about Olimpus E410? I bouth it for my girlfriend and now it's my second camera:-) Very easy and works really good.

Hi Don. I just bought my wife the olympus SP550 as her walk around camera and everything you say is correct. In my opinion, it has certain limitations if you want to do a variety of shooting in a variety of conditions. The battery problem is one of them. However as a casual camera it is very good. I shoot both an E-510 and an E-1 oly. both these are superb and allow great flexability of use. and have answered the battery problem well. under normal conditions, I am able to get up to 300 images at shq quality (better than the 3072x2304 of the sp550).
The only drawback is the cost and I found that the trade-off with batteries almost made the difference.
If you look at the web site www.myfourthirds.com you will be able to get more information about the olympus which, of course, is my preference in dslr cameras above the rest.

Both are good.

Personally, i choose Nikon.
