I don't much about Wisconsne or Minnesota If your heading in to Colorado I would suggest the Painted Canyon on the Colorado's Western Slope also the Black Hills and MOunt Rushmore National Park offersome beautiful and sites and close up of wild life. The Crazy Horse momunment is also something to see. I would suggedt you may want to tke some telophoto and wide angle lenses I'm not profecent on exect sizes but I am sure your local camera shop could hlep you out
Hope this helps
Living in MN, I can recommend a few places. Almost any town on the WI-MN border will have some nice places to shoot the river, but Redwing & Stillwater are two good ones.
Up north, you can't go wrong with Duluth- it looks east to Lake Superior; there are spectacular sunrises there, especially during the warmer, humid days of August (some nice water vapor comes off the lake). Also the famous Duluth Lift Bridge makes for awesome framing possibilities. Split Rock Lighthouse is up there, too, along with Goosebury Falls.
Lenses: go as wide as you can for shots of the lake. Goosebury falls, use a tripod with a long exposure, and you'll get some cool "moving" water shots of the falls.
