Look for the sun or any lightsource and put the object in front of it and just take photos facing the light behind the object ;-) The brighter the light the better the silhouettes will be ;-D Just mind the angles and composition... :-) Good luck! :-D

I have only had it for a few weeks. I used it at my daughters soccer game the other day and it was perfect. I was on the sidelines and got some great shots of her. Zoomed all the way in I was able to get her head to toe in action while she was just about 2/3 across the field and zoomed out I could get her head to toe at about 10ft. I find myself keeping this on my camera most of the time. I hope this helps give you an idea as to the range of this lens. I think it may work for you.

US is good, but the IS stands for Image Stabilization, which allows you to hand hold it under a little less light.
