Hi Carla :-) Thank you for the comments on my photos ;-D So you want to make silhouette pictures? Look for the sun or any lightsource and put the object in front of it and just take photos facing the light behind the object ;-) The brighter the light the better the silhouettes will be ;-D Just mind the angles and composition... :-) Good luck! :-D
Carla, Welcome to PictureSocial and thank you for your comment on my fence row. You have some really nice photos yourself. Enjoy! What town are you from?
Carla, I was reading your question about the 300mm being to much sometimes. I have the 18-55mm also and a Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM. I have only had it for a few weeks. I used it at my daughters soccer game the other day and it was perfect. I was on the sidelines and got some great shots of her. Zoomed all the way in I was able to get her head to toe in action while she was just about 2/3 across the field and zoomed out I could get her head to toe at about 10ft. I find myself keeping this on my camera most of the time. I hope this helps give you an idea as to the range of this lens. I think it may work for you.

If you look at the moon shots on my profile here, there is one that has the setting shown in the description. :)

US is good, but the IS stands for Image Stabilization, which allows you to hand hold it under a little less light.
